I. Background

The vision of Gadjah Mada University (GMU) is to be a prominent research-based university, to be internationally acknowledged, and to have a commitment towards national development. In line with the vision, UGM is setting up a development plan toward being a World Class Research University. As an unseparated part of the university, the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University (FEB GMU) therefore synchronizes its vision and mission with those of GMU.

The vision of FEB GMU is to be the world prominent faculty in the concerns of the research, education, practices, and spreading of the sciences of accounting, economics, and management by highly upholding ethics, honesty, and academic freedom. The missions of FEB GMU are (i) providing a conducive learning environment for the improvement of social welfare, (ii) preparing the capability of human resources for the nation building that requires the sciences of economics, management, and accounting, and (iii) performing various activities in the forms of transferring, developing, and spreading sciences in the levels of both undergraduate and graduate.

FEB GMU has been striving for continuous improvement to embody the vision to be the world prominent faculty through programs internationalization and AACSB accreditation. FEB GMU has moreover started establishing a conducive environment to guarantee the lecturers to conduct continuous researches without being halted due to the faculty’s having grants from QUE, PHK B, and PHK I. Therefore, there is a logical consequence for FEB GMU to have provided some more facilities to support the lecturers carrying out their researches. Currently, FEB GMU has installed internet connection, collected some varieties of journals (including subscribing online journals through EBSCO), built computer laboratory, had library with some journals collections and data, and bequeathed any other facilities as the beginning of being an internationally standardized school.

To improve the quality of the graduates, some progressive curricula adjustments are applied to keep up with those of the world leading schools of economics and business as required by AACSB accreditation process.

II . Aim

FEB GMU carries on a series of programs internationalization with the aim of improving the quality of both the department and the human resources of FEB GMU based on the international standard as well as creating a very strong basis to guarantee the continuing efforts in embodying the vision of FEB GMU to be one of the world leading schools of economics and business.

III. Programs

The programs proposed by FEB in the frame of being a world class school of economics and business focus on three categories i.e. education, research, and support.

A. Programs for research.

  1. Sending lecturers to give lectures at overseas universities. For the sake of increasing the international exposure of the lecturers of FEB GMU, the faculty sends its lecturers to give lectures in international classes at overseas partner universities. This program is also aimed to both raise understanding between the partner’s academic society and that of FEB GMU and expand international networking.
  2. Organizing research-based short cases on economics and business within Indonesian context by using English language. FEB has research centers in the fields of economics and business i.e. Accounting Development Center (ADC), Economics Development Center (EDC), and Management Development Center (MDC) from which many researches are yielded. Those research results are designated to be materials to organize research-based cases and make them teaching materials to enrich students understanding on the practices of economics and businesses in Indonesia. This program can furthermore attract overseas students to study at FEB GMU. Besides, the learning process using research-based cases is in line with the vision of GMU as a research university.
  3. Organizing cases on sustainable development. GMU is one of the founders and a member of ProPER.Net, a network of 18 leading universities in Asia Pacific committed to integrate Sustainable Development into their graduate curricula. For the time being, FEB GMU does not yet have the materials upon sustainable development as expected by GMU, hence, the program is highly prioritized.

Meanwhile, the internationalization programs in the field of research are as follows::

  1. Mincreasing the quantity of the lecturers who meet the standard academic quality as required by AACSB. Up to now, 60% of FEB lecturers have already met the standard of which the Ph.D. lecturers have publication in the last five years. FEB encourages 20% more lecturers to publish qualified papers to enhance the ratio. The activity is open for all lecturers of FEB GMU and is started from proposal selection, proposal workshop, and research review. The expected outputs are publishable papers.
  2. increasing the quantity of the lecturers’ papers presented in international conferences concerning economics and businesses. Every year 5-8 papers are presented by the lecturers of FEB GMU. This quantity is to be augmented considering that qualified papers and international exposure are very important for the lecturers as well as for FEB GMU as an institution. This program is aimed to encourage more FEB GMU lecturers to present their papers in international conferences.

The supporting program is developing international networking covering up:

  1. attending AACSB annual meeting. As a member of AACSB, FEB is now proposing Accreditation Plan (AP) as a part of accreditation process. Attending AACSB annual meeting is regarded very important in order to obtain the latest information in concern with AACSB accreditation. The AACSB annual meeting will be held in Florida, 26-26 April 2009 from which FEB GMU may take advantages of reaching qualified international accreditation and reputation, as well as establishing either cooperation or experiences sharing with accredited prominent schools of economics and businesses. In relation to the accreditation process, FEB GMU plans to attend ACCSB Assessment Conference in Sydney, Australia on June 29-30, 2009. This meeting is regarded very important and beneficial to obtain a detail description about the assessment requirements to be accomplished by FEB.
  2. cooperation visits to partner universities (Australian National University, University of Queensland, University of Agder, and Kobe University). FEB GMU has more than 15 overseas partner universities. The cooperation between FEB GMU and University of Agder covers up students exchange, lecturers exchange, and sending FEB lecturers to pursue higher degrees i.e. Master and Ph.D. at University of Agder. Eventhough a formal cooperation with University of Queensland (UQ) has not been established yet, both institutions have initiated a double degree program in which FEB GMU has sent the curriculum of International Undergraduate Program of FEB (IUP FEB). The talk between both institutions has come to the discussion on the scheme of students accomplishing 2 years of study at FEB GMU and another 2 years of study at UQ. Therefore, FEB GMU plans to send its representatives to UQ to have a final talk on the double degree program. Furthermore, FEB GMU already has a formal cooperation with Australian National University especially with The National Centre for Development Studies (NCDS). However, this cooperation must be extended to cover up programs on double degree, students and lecturers exchange, and joint research. As with Kobe University, a leading school of economics and business in Japan, FEB GMU arranges a meeting with the authorities of Kobe University to discuss a cooperation on students and lecturers exchange program.
