The undergraduate student team from the Faculty of Economics and Business of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) achieved an outstanding performance in the 2024 Accounting Championship (ACCHAMP) held as part of the Jember Accounting Fair XIV at Universitas Jember on September 28-29, 2024.
The STRAIGHT A team, consisting of Della Nurhaliza, M. Hilmy Naufal, and Arneta Wahyu Noviyanti, all accounting students from the class of 2022, won first place after competing against dozens of top teams from other universities.
"When we were announced as the champions, we felt very proud and happy because all our efforts and preparation had finally paid off," Hilmy said on Wednesday (6/11/2024).
The STRAIGHT A team's road to victory was not without its challenges. The biggest hurdle they faced was the difference in material between the course textbooks and the competition requirements, which only motivated them to study harder from a broader range of resources.
Hilmy explained that they prepared diligently by reviewing course materials, especially financial accounting from semesters 2 and 3, and other topics covered in the competition, such as auditing and financial management. They also divided tasks according to each team member's expertise to maximize their mastery of the material.
"This approach allowed us to focus and thoroughly cover a lot of material in a limited amount of time," Hilmy said.
Their path to victory included several rounds of judging. In the preliminary round, in less than two hours, they answered 100 accounting questions from various areas, such as introductory accounting, financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis. In the semi-final round, they prepared financial projections based on historical data from the previous two periods, supplemented with financial ratios.
This stage included two rounds, Brinicle Finance Metropolis (BRINCEOLIS) and Cloudy Prospective Forest (CLOROFEST), where the STRAIGHT A team demonstrated their analytical skills by quickly solving problems and projecting financial statements via Zoom to secure their place in the finals.
In the finals, STRAIGHT A competed against teams from three other universities in two rounds of debate: Deuce Majestic Contention (DEUMASION) and Clash of Champions (CoC). These were Asian Parliamentary-style debates on economic issues in Indonesia, including the shift from exports to the processing of natural resources. Though initially overwhelmed by frequent objections and interruptions from opposing teams, they managed to shine and eventually win the championship title. "It was an unforgettable experience to be directly involved in the debates and feel the intensity of the competition. Competing on-site gave us a real sense of rivalry," Hilmy reflected.
FEB UGM's victory in the 2024 Accounting Championship at Universitas Jember brought pride to UGM and showcased the quality of education and competitive spirit of FEB UGM students. This achievement serves as an inspiration for other students to continue to excel.
