Rimawan Pradiptyo Won Best Paper Award in Australia

Economist University of Gajah Mada (UGM) Rimawan Pradiptyo, PhD, was recently awarded “The Best Paper Award” for the field of economics in the Global Accounting, Finance and Economics Conference, held at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia from February 14-15, 2011.

Rimawan contacted in Jakarta on Tuesday (22/2), said the scientific article that won the Best Paper was written with two co-authors of Banoon Sasmitasiwi, MSc and Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo, SE which is a young economist graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

He explained that an international seminar was attended by economists from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Uganda, with about 46 scientific papers presented at the seminar.

Although there are five speakers who came from Indonesia in the seminar, Rimawan said he was the only speakers who represent the university in Indonesia.

At the international seminar, Rimawan presenting a paper titled “Evidence of homo economicus? Findings from Experiment On Prisoners? Dilemma Game”. This study attempted to determine the extent to which Indonesian people have the will to cooperate and coordinate.

In this study 96 subjects which are within the academic community GMU follow experiments to play 32 games. The results of this research is controversial because it shows that the tendency of subjects to cooperate or coordinate only 1-2 percent.

These results appear consistent since the first game until the last. So far, more Rimawan many similar studies conducted in developed countries would show a high desire for cooperation, which started around 40 percent in the first game, and go down to around 20 percent in the final game.

The research produced Rimawan and colleagues suggest that coordination is a rare or difficult in Indonesia. Rimawan said that in Indonesia, the coordination is only understood as merely meeting, but no division of tasks and also evaluate the implementation of the division of tasks.

The study combines experimental techniques and game theory (game theory). The areas of specialization listed Rimawan quite unique and rare for the size of Indonesia, which include game theory, experimental economics and economics crime. At Gadjah Mada University, taught courses Rimawan game theory, micro economics and the economics of crime (crime economics), both for S1, S2 and S3.

Although the announcement ceremony and handover the best paper award was made at a dinner after the conference on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, but the new Rimawan know about it on Monday, February 21, 2011 via email that is sent by the committee.

This happens because Rimawan presenting a paper at the last session on Monday (14/2) and the next day on Tuesday (15/2) had to fly to Canberra to present the other two research papers in the Department of Economics, Australian National University and Canberra branch KAGAMA.

In recognition of his achievements, the seminar committee will send a plaque of appreciation and paper Rimawan immediately accepted and will be published in international journal The Journal of Business and Policy Research that specifically only publish the best papers from international seminars.

Rimawan states are very happy to hear the news and did not think at all that the paper will achieve the award. “Thank God this achievement is inseparable from the full support of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University who strongly supports the teachers and students to conduct research and publications at the international level,” said the man born 41 years ago it Ngawi.

It is noteworthy, that the FEB-UGM is a pioneering scheme’s first research contract lecturer at UGM and Rimawan is one of the professors who follow the scheme. Scheme of the research contract is designed to provide an incentive for the faculty to conduct research and international publications.
