Journaling is one of the most effective ways to maintain good mental health. Keeping a journal gives individuals a safe space to express their concerns, ideas, or plans without fear of criticism. Writing down thoughts, feelings, and experiences helps increase self-awareness and understanding of one’s emotions. This, in turn, makes it easier to identify sources of stress and find ways to manage them.
Psychologist Anisa Yuliandri, S.Psi., M.Psi., from the Career and Student Development Center (CSDU) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), notes that journaling can be practiced by all age groups, from children to adults. Regular journaling can increase awareness of personal emotions and stress. There are different types of journaling, such as a gratitude journal to write about things to be thankful for, a bullet journal for personal planning, an emotional release journal, and a therapy journal to help with trauma healing or emotional therapy.
Anisa mentions that individuals can start journaling based on the type of writing they prefer. However, brain dump journaling can be an excellent choice if they are unsure where to begin. A brain dump is a freewriting session in which individuals pour everything on their minds onto a blank page, whether it be ideas, thoughts, to-do lists, or other concerns. The goal of a brain dump is to get all the mental burdens on paper without worrying about the final result.
“The hope is that this technique can help reduce mental stress and increase productivity by organizing ideas,” she explains.
While there are no hard and fast rules for brain dumping, Anisa suggests several steps. First, prepare a medium for writing, such as a notebook, journal, tablet, or other medium. Then, set a consistent time for writing and develop the habit of journaling regularly. Next, choose a comfortable and distraction-free place to write and allow your writing to flow freely without worrying about grammar, structure, or neatness. In addition, to improve your mood, you can end your brain dump session with a statement of self-appreciation, a list of things that motivate you, or a list of solutions to current problems.
By practicing brain dump journaling regularly, individuals can manage their mental health more effectively and increase their productivity. Writing is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to manage thoughts and negative emotions daily. However, it is important to remember that the benefits of journaling and brain dumping may vary from person to person. If you continue to struggle after trying this method, do not hesitate to seek support from those around you or consult a professional.
