UNESCO UNITWIN 2018

Delegations from Universitas Gadjah Mada won the UNESCO-UNITWIN ICT and Leadership Advanced Workshop and Competition 2018 program which was held last winter in South Korea from 10-15 December 2018, this competition is continuation competition from the 2017 Sookmyung UNESCO-UNITWIN program: Women’s Empowerment through ICT Skills and Leadership Education held in Yogyakarta in early 2018. The activity which was fully funded by the Ministry of Education of Republic of South Korea was attended by 39 people who were selected teams from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Life University, Royal University of Pnom Penh, National University of Laos and Souphanouvong University.

Universitas Gadjah Mada team named Kartini Gama consists of 7 members namely Anisa Dian Larasati (Economics 2014), Hanin Banurukmi (Tourism 2015), Nurisa Fajri Wijayanti (Geography 2015), and Linda Oktavianingsih (Doctoral Program Biology 2014) from leadership team and Teya Titiang Tiana (International Relations 2015), Christina Dwi Kusumaningtyas (Microbilogy 2014), Rizka Dwi Amalia (Geography 2015) from ICT team. During the activity, each team received training and guidance from professors / lecturers, and all are experts in their fields. At the end of the activity, each team as a university representative was given a final project on empowering women who could contribute at the level of individuals, schools, families, government, from local to international using ICT.

UGM team won the 1st place by bringing up the idea of protecting female workers, which was inspired by many cases of death and abuse that afflicted emigrant workers especially the Indonesian women. UGM team developed a prototype named HER (Helper Bracelet for Women Emigrant Workers) to help women migrant workers who work in the domestic sector who are in the susceptible of violence and abuse.

They hope that this idea and prototype can be further developed to improve women’s empowerment in developing countries which is in line with the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals such as Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth.
