Angklung, the traditional musical instrument of West Java, represents harmony, unity, and togetherness—values embraced within the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM). One of the artistic communities that embodies this spirit is Angklung Manise Swara FEB UGM, founded in 2019 by Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) FEB UGM under the coordination of Erna Gugup Kismono.
Erna Gugup Kismono, the coordinator of Angklung Manise Swara FEB UGM, shared that the community was initially formed from DWP FEB UGM’s desire to establish its own Angklung ensemble. They proposed the idea to Prof. Eko Suwardi, the Dean of FEB UGM at the time, who approved it. Since its inception, the group has actively practiced and performed at various campus events, including FEB UGM’s Anniversary Celebration and UGM’s Nitilaku Procession. Their performances have drawn considerable attention, attracting more members to join. Looking ahead, Erna hopes the community will continue to grow and receive ongoing support from the faculty, the academic community, and the public.
Ana Budiono, one of the members of Angklung Manise Swara FEB UGM, shared her motivation for joining. After watching a performance at FEB UGM’s anniversary celebration, she felt drawn to the community.
“I could see the happiness and excitement of the members as they played Angklung. Even the audience, including students and faculty, enjoyed the performance. That was when I decided to join,” she said.
Challenges and obstacles are an inevitable part of rehearsals. Erna Budi Santoso, a community member, noted that some songs have a fast tempo, making them particularly difficult to play. However, she believes that these challenges add to the excitement. Moreover, the camaraderie and strong bonds among members during rehearsals play a crucial role in overcoming these difficulties.
Rita Didi Achjari also shared her experience participating in rehearsals for the Nitilaku event on December 15 last year. She mentioned that approximately 150 members attended the rehearsals, which were held six times at various locations, including Wisma Kagama and Grha Sabha Pramana (GSP). Beyond the training sessions, members strengthened their sense of community through social interactions and the tradition of sharing meals after rehearsals.
Meanwhile, Asep, the coach of Angklung Manise Swara FEB UGM, expressed his joy in training community members who possess a strong artistic spirit. He primarily trains the group in preparation for performances, as regular rehearsals have not yet become routine. Looking ahead, he hopes the community will deepen its engagement with Angklung and its cultural heritage through consistent practice sessions.
Asep also emphasized that art is not only a medium of self-expression but also plays a vital role in enhancing mental and physical well-being while fostering social connections.
“The purpose of art and culture is to bring life—to keep people healthy and happy. From this perspective, this Angklung community has the potential to make a meaningful impact, not only for UGM but also for Indonesia. I hope they continue to find joy through the arts,” he concluded.
