Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) once again supported a guest lecture on Friday (2/15). Located at the Learning Center Building 8th floor of the FEB UGM, the speaker was one of the Unicorn start-up companies in Indonesia, Bukalapak. Bukalapak’s Vice President of Talent, Gema Buana Putra, presented the topic of human resources in this industry 4.0 with the title “Being an Agile HR in Order to Achieve Unicorn Start Up”.

In this guest lecture, the discussion was guided directly by one of the lecturers of FEB UGM, Bita Puspitasari, S.E., M.Econ. At the beginning of the presentation, Gema delivered a brief explanation on how the development of industrial revolution took place in the world. From the industrial revolution 1.0 to 4.0, the only thing that is constant is change. “Each era is a different and all is a challenge; and there are people who penetrate the challenge. They break the code,” Gema said. He considers that every time changes occur, surely there are people who will always try to solve the problems.

After explaining a little about the fourth industrial revolution, he was discussing more about the field he is involved in, namely human resource (HR). For him, the HR world has now entered a period of uncertainty. Therefore, human capital management is sought to be able to face this challenge. “Agile human capital as we have now entered the VUCA area. Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity (complex relationships), and Ambiguity. “Human Capital Management (HCM) must adjust to compete,” he said to around 200 participants.

Even in today’s era, with the advent of cutting edge technologies such as big data and internet, people in the current generation expect unafraid. He said that human beings are simply irreplaceable. “Even with robots and technological advance, there are parts that cannot be replaced by robots. What can’t be replaced? Humanity, “explained the father of two children. He said that human’s natural gifts such as intuition, creativity and judgment will never carried out by robots.

However, challenges in this era has also changed. He revealed that there are four major challenges: speed, clutter, changes, and flexibility. “The market is all fast. Things that used to take 2-3 days to finish, are now done in 2-3 hours. Sometimes we don’t have time to organize, if we think we’re serialized. So we get pushed. The Dean was also agreeing about the constant change statement. It’s not a matter of packaging, but about what we produce, he explained about the current challenges of the industry. To become an agile HR, Gema believes that there should be six keys carried out by the stakeholders, especially in the HR field. The six keys are autonomous, trust, safe to fail, simplicity, learning, and business oriented. “HR is good, but if the business nothing means there is a missing piece. HR better can’t get nothing, but the business is in progress, “he said.

After 45 minutes of interesting presentation, the session continued with question and answer. Participants was very curious about the world of HR in industry 4.0. The guest lecture ended with conclusions delivered by the moderator. “A lot of what you heard (about the industrial revolution, red) then it becomes scary. You will be replaced with artificial intelligence and so on. Even though, in fact, to be able to survive, the best for you is to be yourself, “concluded Bita while ending the meeting that afternoon. The guest lecture was closed with a photo session.
