The Alumni Family of the Faculty of Economics and Business UGM (KAFEGAMA) Branch DI Yogyakarta collaborated with the Faculty of Economics and Business of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) organized a National Seminar on Green Economy titled “Carbon Exchange as an Emission Control Instrument: Strategies and Implementation. The seminar was held on Friday, November 8, 2024, on the 8th floor of the FEB UGM Learning Center.

The National Green Economy Seminar Chair, Junaidi, expressed his hopes for cross-sector collaboration involving the government, environmental advocates, and students in addressing this global environmental issue. He also hopes this seminar can explore strategies and implementations for carbon trading practices that support Indonesia’s commitment to global emission control.

In his opening remarks, FEB UGM Dean Prof. Dr. Didi Achjari, M.Com., Ak., CA. Emphasized that this seminar, a collaboration between FEB UGM and KAFEGAMA DI Yogyakarta, aligns with FEB UGM’s vision and mission to develop future leaders who are both strong in economics and business and committed to environmental sustainability. “The challenge is how we, as a business school, can contribute to environmental conservation while reaping economic benefits, one of which is through the carbon trading mechanism. Hopefully, this event will raise awareness of the role of carbon trading as an alternative for climate change mitigation in Indonesia,” he explained.

The keynote speaker at the seminar was Inarno Djajadi, Head of the Capital Market, Derivatives, and Carbon Exchange Supervisory Executive. Inarno emphasized the importance of implementing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles to address climate change amidst rapid business and economic growth. He also stressed the need to build a solid carbon market ecosystem in Indonesia to ensure the effectiveness of the carbon trading scheme in promoting a green economy.

The event continued with a panel discussion featuring three speakers with different perspectives. First, Bagus Tirthayatra, Head of the Special Inspection Department for Derivative Finance, Carbon Exchange, and Securities Transactions, discussed the role of the OJK in implementing carbon trading in Indonesia. Next, IDX Development Director Jeffrey Hendrik presented the carbon trading system through the Indonesian Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon). Finally, FEB UGM Lecturer and Deputy Head of the UGM Energy Studies Center (PSE UGM), Ardiyanto Fitrady, Ph.D., outlined the mechanisms, impacts, and challenges of carbon trading from an economic perspective.

The national seminar aimed to raise awareness among the public and students on the importance of reducing carbon emissions to achieve sustainable economic growth in Indonesia. This is in line with Indonesia’s national vision of achieving net zero emissions by 2060, as well as the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #7 (affordable and clean energy), #11 (sustainable cities and communities), and #13 (climate action).

During the event, KAFEGAMA DI Yogyakarta also symbolically presented scholarships and learning support facilities to FEB UGM, totaling Rp150,000,000. The event also marked the inauguration of the MBA FEB UGM Investment Gallery.
