Twelve recipients of the Bappenas scholarship, currently enrolled in the Master of Development Economics (MEP) study program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), have embarked on a linkage study program at several prestigious universities in Japan. They are part of the Master Linkage Professional Human Resource Development (PHRD) program, which runs from August 2024 to August 2025. Through this initiative, students have the opportunity to deepen their expertise in development planning.
Having completed their first year of study at MEP UGM during the 2023/2024 academic year, the students are now continuing their second year at renowned Japanese institutions, including the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Takushoku University, Hiroshima University, Kobe University, the International University of Japan, and Ritsumeikan University.
MEP FEB UGM Program Director Akhmad Akbar Susamto, S.E., M.Phil., Ph.D., stated that the linkage program is a strategic initiative to enhance Indonesia’s human resource capacity in addressing global challenges.
“This program not only provides students with exposure to a world-class academic environment but also expands their international networks, which can contribute to national development,” he remarked on Thursday (February 6, 2025).
Akbar further explained that during their studies at MEP UGM, students are equipped with essential skills in regional economic planning and development. Their second year in Japan presents a valuable opportunity to engage with strategic issues in economics, planning, public policy, and international relations under the guidance of distinguished academics and experts.
He expressed hope that the linkage program would continue in the future. Beyond strengthening educational ties between Indonesia and Japan, the program fosters new perspectives, facilitates strategic collaborations, and prepares students to become future leaders. With their academic experience in Japan, these students are expected to play a pivotal role in driving innovative and sustainable development in Indonesia.
