To strengthen the institution’s image, the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), organized a workshop titled “Strengthening the Narrative of FEB UGM Publications: News Writing and Photography Training” on Monday, May 19, 2025. The workshop took place in the Audio Visual Room on the 1st floor of the East Wing Building at FEB UGM and brought together public relations staff, professional staff, and FEB UGM students.
Head of Learning, Academic and Multimedia Production & Public Relations (LAMPR) FEB UGM, Fitri Amalia, Ph.D., said that in recent years, FEB UGM has continued to be committed to improving public relations management amid the increasingly complex challenges of higher education.
“We hope that through this training, participants can learn to compose good news narratives and increase engagement through effective writing and photography techniques,” said Fitri.
Fitri also emphasized the importance of crafting strong news narratives and supporting visuals to help publications reach a wider audience.
“The annual achievement target of the unit’s performance indicators includes 1,500 news tags, so the ability to deliver news interestingly is a strategic key,” she said.
This workshop featured two professional speakers from Kompas: the Head of the DIY-Central Java Bureau, Haris Firdaus, and Kompas Photojournalist, Ferganata Indra Riatmoko. On this occasion, Haris delivered a presentation on writing news with journalistic standards. He started his presentation by discussing journalistic activities, news values, news types, news angles, and tips for writing news. Meanwhile, Indra explained a lot about photography for public relations and how to produce good photos by applying basic photography techniques, such as shooting techniques, lighting, and composition.
The participants received intensive training in material exposure, hands-on practice in news writing and journalistic photography techniques, and feedback sessions from the speakers on their work. This activity was packaged with material presentation from resource persons, interactive discussions, and practical simulations. The workshop was conducted with enthusiasm, as evidenced by the active participation in discussions and field practices.
This activity aligns with the commitment of FEB UGM to become a faculty that excels in education, research, and community service. Through strengthening public relations capacity, FEB UGM seeks to present institutional communication that is professional, informative, and has a positive impact on the public.
