Ali Alexander, a student from the Management Program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), achieved a notable accomplishment at the International Stock Portfolio Analysis Competition 2025. He teamed up with Ahmad Dzaki Sofyan from DEB SV UGM (Property Management and Valuation 2022), and Elsa Firlyani from DEB SV UGM (Property Management and Valuation 2021), who were part of the Balairung Capital team, secured first place in the competition organized by the Investment Gallery of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (GIBEI) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Jakarta.
They successfully outperformed dozens of other teams from various universities, both domestic and international, under the guidance of I Wayan Nuka Lantara, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D. In this online competition held throughout May-June 2025, all participants were required to create a stock portfolio capable of generating maximum returns with the lowest possible risk. Also, the portfolio created must outperform the IHSG as a market benchmark.
“From more than 20 stocks that the committee has curated, each team is only allowed to select five stocks considered the most promising. This challenge encourages us to analyze technically and fundamentally and consider macroeconomic dynamics and the risks inherent in each issuer,” said Ali.
Ali explained that the competition consists of four main stages: selecting five stocks, followed by evaluating the performance of the selected stocks, then preparing an in-depth analysis paper, and finally selecting the ten best teams to advance to the presentation (pitching) stage in front of the judging panel. He and his team used a top-down analysis approach to develop their strategy. This approach begins with observing the broader industry conditions, then narrowing down to analyzing economic catalysts, selecting companies with strong fundamentals, assessing financial aspects and valuations, and identifying specific risks. This approach allows them to build a strong and logical argument for the investment decisions made.
