Business Model Canvas 2023

Sunday (05/11), the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) received another good news. Two students from the 2021 Bachelor of Business Management Study Program, Hayfaza Nayottama Auliarachim and Yulia Dwi Kustari, who joined the Laut Selatan Team with Ardhan Nur Urfan from STEI ITB 2021, succeeded in becoming first place in the 2023 Business Model Canvas National Competition organized by HIPMI PT UNNES. This competition has the theme “Social Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development”. This achievement aligns with Sustainable Development Goals No. 4, namely Quality Education.

The Laut Selatan team brought a business idea that was very different from other teams. “The majority of them were bringing business ideas with massive technological concepts, such as applications, platforms, tools with integrated IoT, and so on,” said Yulia. The Laut Selatan Team utilized the potential of maggots, which have a high protein content, to be processed into meat floss as a superfood that can be consumed daily. According to the team, the business idea called “Maggoty Munchies” is expected to realize sustainable consumption that is environmentally friendly and nutritious, in line with Sustainable Development Goals No. 2 (Zero Hunger) and 3 (Good Health and Well-Being).

Maggots, generally only used as animal feed, are creatively used by the Laut Selatan Team to process them into nutritious meat floss suitable for consumption. The type and quality of maggots used to make meat floss differ from those used as animal feed. “In essence, the extraordinary potential of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation, in order to achieve zero organic waste, combined with its short life cycle, as well as the increasing interest of the global community in superfoods, underlies us to develop the use of BSF maggots into ready-to-eat food, namely delicious and nutritious meat floss for humans,” explained Yulia.

Yulia highlighted that one of the challenges the Laut Selatan Team faced was convincing the judges and audiences regarding the business innovation they presented. “Of course, many people were sceptical about using maggots for human consumption,” she said. They also realized that this business idea was unique and different, so they paid great attention to the presentation so that their business innovation could be well received. They did much research, study, and practice to prepare for this. The Laut Selatan Team won first place thanks to serious struggle, beating delegation teams from other universities in the final round.

FEB UGM congratulates the Laut Selatan Team on their brilliant achievement!
