Meet Farmila Sari: Best Graduate of MEP FEB UGM

Farmila Sari

Farmila Sari (27) never expected to be named the best graduate of the Master in Development Economics (MEP) program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) at the postgraduate graduation ceremony for the second period of the 2024/2025 academic year. She achieved an outstanding cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.89 and completed her studies in just 1 year, 9 months, and 26 days.

Born in Magelang, Farmila is deeply grateful for her achievement. She considers this recognition beyond her expectations because her primary goal in pursuing a master’s degree was not just to achieve a high GPA. Her main focus was to deepen her knowledge of applied economics and apply it in real life. This achievement is another motivation for her to continue growing and inspiring others.

Farmila emphasized that the Development Economics program at UGM was her first and only choice. Her desire to explore applied economics drove her to focus on one goal: becoming a part of FEB UGM.

Earning a master’s degree is a journey full of challenges. Farmila revealed that classroom learning accounts for less than 20 percent of the process, while the rest requires self-study.

“The biggest challenge is maintaining consistency and self-confidence amidst various academic pressures,” she said.

Although she completed her undergraduate degree at a university with an average reputation, Farmila could keep up with top university students. She also found that her experience as a research assistant during her studies at MEP FEB UGM added significant value, helping her to understand the world of research while enriching her academic journey.

One of the most profound lessons Farmila learned at MEP FEB UGM is that maturity is not always related to age. She realized the importance of never underestimating herself or others, as true potential often emerges from the most unexpected people.

In addition, her experience taking online courses from international platforms such as the MIT Open Course became one of her strategies for broadening her knowledge. She took advantage of these opportunities to gain new perspectives that complemented her on-campus studies.

Farmila emphasizes the importance of integrity, one of the core values of FEB UGM. Although not always easy, this value has helped her develop a moral and ethical character.

Farmila said, “Integrity is not just a concept but a value we must apply in every step of life.”

During her studies at MEP FEB UGM, Farmila actively participated in the LPDP UGM organization. She also had the opportunity to participate in an international conference where she gained valuable new experiences. She successfully presented at the 19th IRSA International Conference in Ambon in 2024.

Familia also shared several tips for academic success. First, learn on your own and not rely too much on others.

“Develop the initiative to understand the material in your way,” she advised.

Next, expand your knowledge. How? Farmila suggested reading literature from various sources to broaden perspectives rather than sticking to one reference.

“Equally important, use technology to enrich your knowledge,” she concluded.
