Integrity is the primary foundation for utilizing technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), in today’s digital era. It was conveyed by the Director General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Bimo Wijayanto, S.E., Ak, M.B.A., Ph.D., in a session titled “Using AI Wisely and with Integrity: Preparing Students as a Transparent Generation in the Digital Era of Taxation and Finance” before new students.
In the Inspiring Person session, part of the Pionir Simfoni 2025 series on Wednesday (6/8) at the FEB UGM Plaza, Bimo began reflecting on his university years three decades ago. He recalled that at the time, access to information was still limited and not as extensive as it is today.
“Back then, knowledge sources were limited to the library. Now, everything is at your fingertips. However, we must not become complacent without understanding the essence,” he said.
He emphasized that the main challenge faced by today’s generation is maintaining integrity by upholding honesty, ethical values, and consistency between words and actions. Therefore, he encouraged the new students to commit to honesty, as it would impact their reputation long-term.
“Resolve always to be honest. A good reputation will open many opportunities and garner support,” Bima advised.
Bimo went on to explain the role of AI in the world of finance and taxation. He distinguished between Analytical AI, which processes historical and real-time data to identify patterns and trends, and Generative AI, which produces content based on natural language. Combining both can accelerate work processes, improve efficiency, and strengthen human resource capacity.
“AI is highly relevant to taxation because it simplifies recording hundreds of state revenue transactions. At the Directorate General of Taxes, we use CRM, ARVITA, TCHS, and 40 other planned AI initiatives,” he revealed.
Although AI offers many conveniences, Bimo warned about the risks of not using it wisely or fully understanding it. After all, AI is merely a machine learning-based tool.
“Strategic decisions must rely on responsible judgment because they cannot surpass moral values. AI only supports processes to make them faster, not to replace them,” he stressed.
He also highlighted the risk of AI hallucination, which can produce inaccurate information, making validation essential. It is also crucial to safeguard data privacy by implementing AI guardrails. These guardrails are critical for limiting access, monitoring algorithms, and ensuring security.
Bimo urged students to become a transparent and integrity-driven generation by maximizing the power of AI.
“UGM has produced many leaders. Use AI for self-development, build networks with integrity, and generate real initiatives for the nation,” he concluded.
