Many recent graduates still face challenges in the job application process, particularly in preparing a compelling resume and navigating the interview process. These two steps are crucial in hiring and often determine whether a candidate secures the job.
To address these challenges, the Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU) of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), organized a webinar titled “Ace Your Job Search: CV Writing and Interview Hacks” on Thursday, April 17, 2025, held online via Zoom Meeting.
How to Craft a Powerful CV
Maya Septriana, a career coach and consultant, emphasized the importance of having a strong and standout CV, as it is the first impression a recruiter will have of you. She shared tips and insights on improving job applications and performing well in interviews.
Before creating a resume, candidates should list their accomplishments, experiences, and relevant education. To simplify the process when applying for different jobs, Maya recommended creating a master resume that can later be tailored to specific job applications.
She emphasized that writing a resume is not a matter of guesswork – key elements must be considered. First, contact details should be precise; candidates should avoid listing complete home addresses, using unprofessional email addresses, or listing multiple phone numbers – one number is enough.
Second, the resume should effectively showcase the candidate. An ideal summary introduces the candidate while highlighting skills, accomplishments, and awards relevant to the position. Avoid vague statements, unsubstantiated claims, and writing in the first person.
Third, include only relevant education or certifications in the education section. Fourth, work experience should be presented using the CAR method—Challenge, Action, and Result—to highlight your role and impact within the organization. Each experience should be written in concise bullet points.
“Avoid simply listing job descriptions without demonstrating impact or skills gained,” she advised.
Fifth, include a professional photo with a simple background and a friendly or approachable expression. In terms of design, the resume should use easy-to-read fonts.
Candidates are also encouraged to tailor their resumes to match the job description by incorporating relevant keywords, such as problem-solving, communication, or technical skills, to increase their chances of passing through applicant tracking systems and catching the employer’s attention. This increases the chances of getting past the initial screening stage. In addition, foreign language skills should be listed, including English proficiency and formal test scores such as TOEFL/IELTS.
Interview Preparation
Many job seekers still find interviews intimidating. According to Maya, this mindset can lead to nervousness and anxiety. She encouraged candidates to shift their perspective—seeing interviews not as obstacles but as golden opportunities for mutual discovery between themselves and the company.
Still, preparation is key. Before the interview, candidates should research the company they are applying to – its profile, vision, mission, and products or services. For online interviews, they can also prepare a small note with key points to highlight. Practicing interview responses in front of a mirror or with a friend can be a helpful simulation and build confidence.
When asked to introduce themselves, candidates should keep it under three minutes. Begin by thanking the interviewer for the opportunity, then provide a brief background, highlight key skills, explain why you are a good fit for the position, and share your motivation for choosing this particular role and company.
Maya reminded attendees not to get discouraged if they don’t get a call back after the interview. “If you don’t get a call after the interview, don’t let that define your value. Many factors caused you to be overqualified; maybe the salary expectations weren’t right. We have our values and must believe in them,” she concluded.
