As part of the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) Lecturer Competency Development Program, the Department of Management of FEB UGM, in collaboration with the Research and Development for Societal Impact (RDSI) and Bisnis Indonesia, held a Popular Writing Workshop on Thursday (October 16, 2025). The workshop featured two speakers from Bisnis Indonesia: Hery Trianto, Director of Bisnis Indonesia, and Akhirul Anwar, Editor of the Opinion Section.
Head of the Department of Management FEB UGM, Prof. Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom., Cand.Merc., Ph.D., welcomed the event and collaboration as a strategic step to strengthen the contribution of FEB UGM academics in the public sphere. This initiative marks a significant step in broadening lecturers’ perspectives on popular writing. Future research and ideas produced by faculty members, if disseminated more widely, could support sustainability and create a greater societal impact.
Hery Trianto emphasized the importance of understanding how the media works for academics. According to him, a good message will not reach the public without the right communication strategy. He shared several key steps to attract media attention, including choosing topics with high news value, building relationships with editors, sharing data and perspectives of public interest, and staying informed about the dynamics of media agendas.
Meanwhile, Akhirul Anwar provided practical guidance on writing engaging and publishable opinion pieces for the mass media. He explained that a strong opinion article should address current issues and be relevant to public interests. It should also use clear, accessible language.
Through this initiative, FEB UGM reaffirms its commitment to bridging the academic world with the public. The programme’s goal is to establish an educational community that actively contributes to the development of constructive public discourse.
