Friday (7/07), the 5th session of Global Summer Week 2023 was led by Dr. Fitri Amalia. Dr. Fitri is a lecturer from the Department of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM). On this occasion, Dr. Fitri explained material related to risks and ethics in the digital ecosystem. The session opened with an explanation regarding the importance of technology in today’s life. Digital technology has opened up opportunities to improve global interconnection, access to information and entertainment, efficiency and productivity, shopping convenience, and innovation development, which is increasingly skyrocketing.
Furthermore, Dr. Fitri defines digital transformation as the integration of digital technology across all aspects of the organization. Thus, digital transformation brings fundamental changes to companies in how they operate and deliver their values. This can be exemplified by what happened to Walmart, a franchise company in the United States. Walmart has transformed its operations, from implementing e-commerce in sales to digitally integrated supply chain systems. Digital transformation will broadly impact various fields, including the business and retail sectors, accounting, supply chain, banking, and the health system.
However, digital transformation also creates many challenges, ranging from data protection and the ethics of technology use to social impact, digital wellbeing, copyright, security, and digital knowledge gaps among the public. Two crucial problems that companies need to address include data privacy issues and the widespread misinformation in society. Fitri gave the Cambridge Analytica Case and the Björk case as concrete examples of data leakage problems in the digital era. Dr. Fitri also alluded to the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the digital transformation era. The existence of AI also raises ethical issues, including objectivity, privacy, accountability, and trust.
In response to these problems, Dr. Fitri explained the urgency of digital ethics within a company. Digital ethics is a set of values governing a company’s technology approach. It is intended to enable workers to use technology in their business strategy and operations. Then, various legal regulations and ethical frameworks for digital transformation are explained. In closing, despite all the challenges, digital transformation also creates opportunities, such as new tasks and roles, workers with higher abilities, ethical and optimal application of AI, and new symbiotic opportunities between humans and machines in the future.
