Writing is often a significant challenge for students. To help develop academic writing skills that meet established standards and ethics, FEB UGM, through its Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU), once again hosted the STAR LEAD program on Writing Skills and Reference Manager. The program was held over two days, November 22-23, 2024.
This program was specifically designed for the 2022/2023 undergraduate students. It aimed to equip FEB UGM students with the ability to produce high-quality academic work, ranging from papers to theses. Beyond technical skills, the program also sought to raise students' awareness of the importance of maintaining originality and integrity in academic writing.
One of the keynote speakers, Handini Audita, S.E., M.Sc., a lecturer in the Department of Management at FEB UGM, provided practical guidance on academic writing through her material Academic Writing Skills and Reference Manager: A Survival Guide for Undergraduate Thesis. Handini emphasized that good academic writing must demonstrate clarity, coherence, the use of relevant data, and a professional writing style. During her session, attendees learned how to avoid plagiarism, create citations, and use AI technology for reference searching and proofreading tasks.
Handini also emphasized the importance of reference management in academic writing. Applications such as Mendeley and Zotero were presented as practical solutions for organizing and managing bibliographies. Students were taught to use features like the Web Importer to add references directly from online articles and integrate them into their writing process.
In addition, Maryatun, S.E., M.A., the FEB UGM Library Unit Coordinator, emphasized the need for academic writing to be objective, formal, and technical. Students were reminded to follow the writing guidelines. They were also introduced to various support tools such as Microsoft Word for formatting and reference management applications such as Zotero.
