Info Session - Glasgow University

Do you want to do your PhD in Europe? The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) partnered with one of the world’s top universities in Europe, the University of Glasgow, to explore the University’s Ph.D. programs through a Ph.D. Program Info Session held on December 12, 2024, at the Kertanegara Room, FEB UGM.

Through this session, FEB UGM students and alumni received direct explanations from the University of Glasgow, ranging from application procedures to research opportunities that can be undertaken during their doctoral studies. For this session, FEB UGM invited the Internalization Director of the University of Glasgow, Dr. Belgin Okay-Somerville, and a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, Prof. Sai Ding.

Dr. Belgin Okay-Somerville shared that UGM and the University of Glasgow are universities on different continents. However, they share similarities in global connectivity and strategic partnerships with other universities worldwide. “We are also actively building collaborative relationships with world-renowned universities,” said Belgin.

Belgin explained that Glasgow is one of the friendliest cities in the world, so international students don’t have to worry about continuing their studies in this region. In addition, Glasgow offers many music, parks, and art attractions that can make the study experience more enjoyable. The University of Glasgow is recognized as a leading university in research and has a significant positive impact on society, as assessed by the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

As a leading research university, the University of Glasgow has four main research areas: tackling inequality, digital society, policy development, and environmental sustainability. Prof. Sai Ding outlined several research clusters at the Adam Smith Business School. These research clusters include Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Development, and Political Economy; Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior; Macroeconomics; Microeconomics; Strategy and Technology Management; Applied Economics; Finance; International Business and Entrepreneurship; Marketing; and Operations and Service Management.

Meanwhile, the doctoral program at the University of Glasgow consists of three programs, namely a Ph.D. in Accounting and Finance, a Ph.D. in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Management. The Ph.D. program takes 3 years (full-time student) with a maximum completion time of 4 or 5 years (part-time student). This program is a full-time, three-year research program, and students must take only a few courses in the first year. Prospective students must have a research proposal before applying and contacting a potential advisor. Although it is not required, contacting a potential supervisor in advance may increase the chances of acceptance.

During the PhD program at the University of Glasgow, students are supervised by at least two supervisors or a group of supervisors who meet monthly to discuss research progress. In addition, an annual performance review is held in April each year, where students must present their research. Students must complete a thesis and pass an oral examination to graduate from the program. For more information on requirements, procedures, and application deadlines, prospective students can visit the University of Glasgow‘s official website.

The Ph.D. Program Info Session with the University of Glasgow is a strategic step for FEB UGM to expand access to quality doctoral education for students and alumni. Through this collaboration, more FEB UGM graduates can continue their studies at one of the world’s leading universities, enriching their academic insights and scientific contributions on a global scale. FEB UGM remains committed to supporting students’ academic and professional development through international cooperation programs.
