Internship programs serve as a gateway for students to gain experience and build networks. Securing an internship at a prestigious institution like Bank Indonesia (BI) is a dream for many students, including those at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UGM. Juan Kenneth Demarco, a 2021 Economics student, successfully secured the valuable opportunity to intern at BI as a researcher and data analyst through the Certified Internship and Independent Study Program (MSIB). Let’s dive into his story!
Juan revealed that the key to passing this program is thorough preparation and strong determination. This includes gathering as much information as possible about the target company, the position you are applying for, and the required documents.
Regarding document preparation, Juan mentioned that Bank Indonesia has a specific resume format that follows the same key points as an ATS-friendly resume. He advised that any experience and research listed should be in line with the needs of the target department.
“The resume submitted through MSIB for Bank Indonesia is automatically forwarded and reviewed by the relevant department. Make sure that your CV matches your experience, as any mistakes or incomplete information could hinder your chances of advancing to the next stage,” Juan explained.
Juan was lucky because his department required research experience. He included all of his research experience, such as winning an international paper competition at The 21st Economix and conducting research and writing papers in his macroeconometrics class.
“It turned out that the department’s needs matched my experience, which helped my resume pass the selection process and get to the interview stage,” he said, emphasizing that the interview should be used to the fullest.
Learning and Growing at Bank Indonesia
When choosing a department for his internship at Bank Indonesia, Juan looked for an area that would provide new experiences and insights rarely covered in class – the Macroprudential Policy Department. His project focused on research related to macroprudential policy, particularly in the area of investment credit.
“As an economics major, the term investment credit was not too familiar to me, so I had to learn a lot of new concepts. Fortunately, my previous research in macroeconometrics and microeconometrics allowed me to use familiar tools such as Stata, EViews, and Excel,” he added.
Juan gained several benefits from his internship, from hands-on work experience to expanding his professional network. His experience deepened his understanding of data analysis and helped him connect with senior staff and other interns.
“There are about 150 interns at Bank Indonesia, which is a great opportunity for networking,” he said.
Don’t Be Afraid to Try!
For students interested in interning at Bank Indonesia, Juan encourages them to embrace challenges and prepare thoroughly.
“Don’t be afraid to try and do your best, from your resume and portfolio to relevant experiences. Although it may seem daunting, the most important thing is to have the courage to seize opportunities and prepare diligently,” he advised.
He also acknowledged the important role FEB UGM played in helping him plan his career. Through its Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU), FEB UGM provides counseling services to assist students in their academic and career planning.
With proper preparation and support from the campus environment, the chances of getting an internship at Bank Indonesia become even greater. Hopefully, Juan’s story will inspire other students to step forward and seize the best opportunities for their future.
