BPKP Auditor Graduates Cum Laude from FEB UGM: His Secrets to Academic and Career Success

Ihsan Manshur Putra

Intelligence, perseverance, and balance in life determine academic success. Ihsan Manshur Putra, a graduate of FEB UGM’s Master of Science in Accounting program, Class of 2023, proved this by achieving cum laude honors with a GPA of 3.87 during the graduation ceremony at the end of January 2025. As an auditor at the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP), Ihsan pursued his Master’s degree to enhance his skills in the field of auditing.

However, his academic journey has not always been smooth. Behind his achievements were challenges that tested his perseverance and consistency. Ihsan shared his strategies for overcoming academic obstacles, from sharpening his analytical mindset to maintaining mental balance. What are his secrets to success? Read his inspiring story below!

Ihsan revealed that his motivation to study accounting stemmed from its role as the foundation of financial governance, transparency, and accountability in both public and private sector organizations. His decision to pursue the Master of Science in Accounting program at FEB UGM was closely related to his work as an auditor at BPKP.

“Auditors need systematic, logical thinking skills that often involve complex data analysis, a deep understanding of regulations, and risk assessment that requires a principles-based approach,” he explained.

Studying in FEB UGM’s Master of Science in Accounting program gave him an academic and research-based learning experience, helping him develop a deeper analytical and logical mindset. In addition, competent faculty members who are experts in their respective fields strengthen the program.

However, Ihsan’s journey through his Master’s program was not always smooth. He faced various challenges but remained grounded in spirituality, perseverance, consistency, and open discussions with peers and professors. Through these approaches, he learned and grew to face future challenges better.

“At some point, we will inevitably experience fatigue and feel overwhelmed with information. In such conditions, opening up and engaging in discussions – whether with fellow students or professors – can help us broaden our understanding, gain new perspectives, and discover new ways to solve problems,” he said.

During his studies, Ihsan developed highly valuable soft skills, particularly leadership, communication, and adaptability. He led by inspiring and motivating others while communicating ideas clearly and persuasively. He also actively contributed to writing two academic papers, which are now undergoing revisions for submission to a Q2 Scopus-indexed journal.

“This experience was a valuable lesson in precision, perseverance, and adapting to international publishing standards. It has also enriched my understanding of constructing logical and relevant arguments in the global research context,” Ihsan said.

For him, the most valuable aspect of his studies was the development of logical thinking and academic discipline, both of which are essential to his role as an auditor. His most memorable moment, however, was working on his thesis.

“The thesis process really changed my perspective and even reshaped my life goals,” he said.

In the interview, Ihsan explained that his training enabled him to maintain speed and accuracy without compromising integrity and relevance as an auditor. He also acknowledged that the values FEB UGM instilled were highly relevant to his professional career.

“All of FEB UGM’s core values- integrity, professionalism, objectivity, equality, academic freedom, and social responsibility- have significantly helped me in my career journey,” he said.

In addition, Ihsan highlighted the importance of academic freedom at FEB UGM, which allowed him to think critically and explore new ideas. Academic freedom is crucial for self-development and innovation and helps him see issues from multiple perspectives. Likewise, the emphasis on social responsibility has inspired him to contribute positively.

After completing his Master of Science in Accounting, Ihsan plans to apply his knowledge at BPKP and pursue a Ph.D. degree. At the end of the interview, he shared a valuable message for FEB UGM students: always accompany their journey with prayer and maintain consistency in their efforts.

“Success comes from continuous and focused effort. It is also important to keep an open mind and engage in discussions. No matter what challenges we face, never hesitate to discuss them – through discussions, we can gain valuable insights that help us in our learning and personal development journey,” he concluded.
