The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), through the Scientific Publication Unit, is organizing the 13th Gadjah Mada International Conference on Economics and Business (GAMAICEB). The annual international conference, held on July 23-24, 2025, at The Alana Hotel & Convention Center, Yogyakarta, will raise strategic issues related to developing a sustainable, inclusive, and empowering tourism sector.
Chairperson of the GAMAICEB committee, Arika Artiningsih, Ph.D., said that GAMAICEB is a routine agenda held annually since 2013. This forum brings together academics, researchers, and practitioners to exchange ideas, knowledge, and disseminate the latest research in economics and business. This year’s conference theme was “Bridging Academics and Practices: Boosting Social Impact in Tourism”.
“We selected this theme to encourage meaningful partnerships that generate positive social impacts through a tourism sector that is sustainable, inclusive, and equitable,” she stated on Wednesday (16/07/2025).
Arika explained that tourism has great potential to drive sustainable development and create meaningful social impact. In the current era of globalization, tourism is an economic driver and a platform for cultural exchange, community empowerment, and environmental preservation.
As one of Southeast Asia’s leading tourism destinations, Indonesia offers a remarkable blend of stunning natural beauty, diverse cultural heritage, and rich traditions. However, Indonesia’s tourism potential lies not only in its ability to attract visitors, but also in its capacity to drive positive social and economic change. By presenting solutions to challenges such as sustainability, inclusiveness, and equitable growth, Indonesia’s tourism industry can become a model in utilizing its assets to benefit local communities and preserve cultural and environmental heritage.
“This conference provides a platform to explore how academic research can support policy-making and industry practice to increase the social impact of tourism. This synergy between academia and practice is the key to unlocking the full potential of tourism as a catalyst for locally and globally positive change,” he explained.
The conference is planned to present several important figures, namely Assistant Deputy for Apparatus Human Resources Capacity Building and Vocational Education, Dr. Andar Danova L. Goeltom, M.Sc, CPM (Asia), CHE; President Director of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Intan Ayu Kartika, and Director of Responsible Borneo-REBORN, Prof. Hiram Ting, as keynote speakers.
Arika further explained that 125 participants 110 attended the conference and will present their latest research results in parallel presentation sessions that discuss current issues in accounting, economics, management, entrepreneurship, investment, and marketing, focusing on strengthening the tourism sector. They come from various universities, institutions, agencies, and companies from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and Vietnam. Participants discuss concrete solutions to challenges in the global tourism industry through this activity.
