The Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) has launched AReNA (Academic Research Navigation), a service designed to support FEB UGM students and the academic community throughout the research and academic writing process. Initiated by the FEB UGM Library, the service assists in academic writing, reference management, and the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Head of the Administrative Office of FEB UGM, Nur Bakti Susilo, S.E., Ak., CA., ASEAN CPA, stated that the launch of AReNA reflects FEB UGM’s commitment to improving the quality of services provided to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
“Amid rapid developments in information technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), we need to be able to adapt and make appropriate and responsible use of technological advancements. We also need to use these technologies ethically in the contexts of learning, administration, and the three pillars of higher education,” he said during the online launch of AReNA on Tuesday (27/10).
He expressed hope that AReNA would assist students in completing their research, including undergraduate theses and postgraduate theses, while maintaining the quality of academic work and upholding academic ethics. In the future, the service is expected to reach all study programs, ensuring that students have access to assistance tailored to their research needs.
“We hope this service can be implemented across all study programs so that there will be people who can serve as a help center for students,” he explained.
AReNA assists in three main areas. First, it supports academic writing by helping users maximize the features available in Microsoft Word.
Second, it provides guidance on reference management using tools such as Zotero and Mendeley, integrated with various academic databases subscribed to by UGM. These databases include Scopus, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, SpringerLink, ProQuest, and others.
Third, AReNA assists the academic community in utilizing AI for research and academic writing. This includes generating research ideas, conducting systematic literature reviews (SLRs), formulating research problems, developing writing frameworks, paraphrasing, language editing, and providing guidance on journal submission and academic publication.
In its use of AI, AReNA also emphasizes the importance of understanding how to use technology responsibly and ethically. AI is positioned as a supporting tool in the thinking and writing process, while researchers remain responsible for academic decisions and the quality of their work.
Through this service, the FEB UGM Library is expected to play a role beyond providing access to information by becoming a partner in the academic community’s research process. AReNA is open to UGM students, lecturers, and researchers to support improvements in the quality of research and academic publications.
