The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) was founded on 19th September 1955, following in the footsteps of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), which was founded on 19th December 1949 and which is considered one of the oldest and biggest universities in Indonesia. FEB UGM is part of the 18 Faculties, one Postgraduate School, and one Vocational School serving under a university that is well-known for its deep root in local culture, nationalism, and internationalisation. In fact, the university is located in Yogyakarta, a student-friendly and historic city that is rich in culture and one of the most popular tourism destinations in Indonesia. In total, UGM has over 47,000 students, 264 study programmes, 111 joint degrees, 23 research centres, 1145 students’ achievements, 727 intellectual properties, 336 professors, 595 senior lecturers, 818 lecturers, and 1,395 teaching fellows. In addition, UGM alumni overall have leading roles in the Indonesian government and prestigious national and multinational companies. In the recent QS World University Rankings of 2022, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has been ranked number one in Indonesia and number 254 in the world.
Since its establishment, FEB UGM continues to improve teaching and research quality standards, becoming a member of world-class business schools’ associations. On 10th March 2006, FEB UGM was registered as a member of The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. On 12th May 2014, FEB UGM then succeeded in achieving AACSB International accreditation and becoming the first AACSB accredited business school in Indonesia. We also have a strong international network by becoming a member of esteemed associations such as European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), Global Business School Network (GBSN), Network of International Business and Economics Schools (NIBES), Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS), and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) University Network for Business and Economics (AUN-BE). In addition, we are currently leading the AUN-BE Secretariat, enabling us to closely collaborate with ASEAN universities and to better understand the ASEAN business and economic environments.
To support our strategic vision for internationalisation across thirteen study programmes, we have established partnerships with over fifty reputable universities around the world, facilitating our students, particularly International Undergraduate Programme (IUP) students, to gain international exposure, which has become a compulsory component of their study in FEB UGM. In the last ten years, we have sent over 800 students to study abroad (mostly to Europe), joining various programmes, including dual degree, exchange, and short programmes. Similarly, we have also received and hosted over 700 international students coming from our partner universities around the world. We host international short programmes, such as International Summer University (ISU) and International Week (iWeek). This year, we will hold a virtual iWeek on 26-30th July 2021, with the grand theme of Digital Transformation and Sustainability in The Global Business Environment. We invite students from around the world including those from our partner universities to join the programme. We collaborate with AUN-BE secretariat and invite internationally recognized professors and executives to teach and share both academic and practical knowledge to the participants. We also offer scholarships for those who have financial difficulties in this COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, our international programmes have been fully supported by the Indonesian government, which recently provides full funding for thousands of Indonesian students, including ours, to join exchange or short courses in our partner universities around the world under Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) and International Credit Transfer (ICT) programmes.
Moreover, to complete our great news this year, our Master of Business Administration (MBA) Programme, one of our flagship programmes and a pioneer of MBA Programme in Indonesia since 1988, has been recognized as it is ranked 75th in the world for its Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes and 178th for its Thought Leadership by QS Global MBA World Rankings 2021. These facts highlight its major contributions to these categories alongside its Employability, Return on Investment, and Class and Faculty Diversity. As a leading graduate school of business in Indonesia, in 2021 our MBA Programme proudly launched the ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management, a joint MBA degree in collaboration with the University of Agder, Norway. The programme offers full scholarships for students from the ASEAN countries.
All in all, with these international programmes, we offer quality research and teaching. Our faculty members are committed to continuously publish research articles in highly reputable international journals under credible publishers including Emerald, Wiley, Springer, and Elsevier, indexed by the Science Citation Index (SCI), Clarivate, and Scopus. With our engaged coaching, we are also proud of our students’ achievements in various international competitions, such as RSM Star Case Competition, HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition, Hultz Prize Regional Summit, and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Student Research Competition. Recently, our students also won the best business plan in the SCG Bangkok Business Challenge. As such, our international programmes not only provide students with necessary knowledge to prepare their future career aspiration, but also connect them with global networks of opportunities.
Finally, the global COVID-19 pandemic has inevitably affected many aspects of our life, including the higher education sector. The good news is that we can learn how to be resilient, by being present and maintaining our productivity to support our students’ continuous learning. This locally rooted and globally respected school aims to develop leaders who have integrity and creativity to serve their community in response to current changes in business and global environments. We invite students to come and discover their academic and leadership potential through a top quality and unique education in our school.
