Department of Accounting Receives Visiting Professor Program by Prof. Kelum Jayasinghe

The Accounting Department, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) implemented a Visiting Professor program by inviting a senior professor from the University of Sheffield, Professor Kelum Jayasinghe, this event takes place on August 16-24, 2023. Prof. Jayasinghe currently also serves as Chair of Accounting and Development Policy at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom (UK). This visiting professor is also based on strengthening Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 4, namely Quality Education; number 11, namely sustainable cities and settlements; and number 17, namely Partnership to achieve the goals.

Prof. Jayasinghe scheduled eleven seminars and workshops in six days, which included seminars with the following titles: Seminar on Introduction to Sustainability Reporting and Practices, Seminar on Public Sector Accounting and Accountability Practices in Less Developed Countries on Wednesday (16/8), Workshop on Research in Accounting and Sustainability, Exploring Interpretive and Critical Accounting Research: A Thought-Provoking Seminar on Friday (18/8), Research Development Clinics on Monday (21/8), Building a Research Atmosphere, Research Groups and Laboratories in Accounting and Research Incubator Session on Tuesday (22/8), Workshop on Sustainability Reporting Practices around the World and Writing for an International Audience: Workshop on Crafting Books and Book Chapters in Accounting on Wednesday (23/8), and Workshop on Developing a Course in Sustainability Accounting and Case Study in Accounting Development Workshop on Thursday (24/8).

In more detail, on Friday (18/8), Prof. Kelum presented a seminar entitled “Exploring Interpretive and Critical Accounting Research: A Thought-Provoking Seminar” at the Learning Building, 8th Floor, FEB UGM. This seminar was attended by students, lecturers and the general public. At this seminar, Prof. Kelum explains the application of sustainable accounting, as well as its transition to government. Prof. Kelum explained that it is necessary to use and introduce general indicators and criteria; for example, the most common ones are Environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG). In particular, Prof. Kelum explained that ESG needs to be integrated into financial reports and used in sustainable journaling and paying attention to all stakeholders. Each seminar session ends with a question and answer session. Prof. Kelum and the Accounting Department held their last visiting professor at FEB UGM on Thursday (24/8).

Integrity is the primary foundation for utilizing technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), in today’s digital era. It was conveyed by the Director General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Bimo Wijayanto, S.E., Ak, M.B.A., Ph.D., in a session titled “Using AI Wisely and with Integrity: Preparing Students as a Transparent Generation in the Digital Era of Taxation and Finance” before new students.

In the Inspiring Person session, part of the Pionir Simfoni 2025 series on Wednesday (6/8) at the FEB UGM Plaza, Bimo began reflecting on his university years three decades ago.
