Wastewater Utilization Leads FEB UGM Students to Win the 2024 UGM Outstanding Individual Award

Anugerah Insan UGM Berprestasi 2024

Faculty of Economics and Business UGM students once again made an impressive achievement by winning the 2024 UGM Outstanding Individual Award during the UGM Outstanding Individual Award Night held at Grha Sabha Pramana on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

The CIGROSYS team, led by Mohammad Agta Annafi’ Sugiyantoro (Economics, 2022) and including Hasan Adi Nugraha (Cartography and Remote Sensing, 2021), received the award for their national first place in the Scientific Writing category of the National Student Competition in Business, Management and Finance (KBMK) 2024 held in June 2024.

The team’s scientific paper, titled “CIGROSYS (Circular Green Solutions for Ecology System): A Strategy for Utilizing Non-Productive Peatlands Previously Used for Oil Palm Plantations through Vaname Shrimp Aquaculture”, addresses the issue of abandoned peatlands degraded by oil palm cultivation. Agta explained that their research idea stemmed from concerns about the increasing number of abandoned peatlands due to soil degradation and lack of productivity. Motivated by this, the team developed the CIGROSYS concept, which uses wastewater from Vaname shrimp aquaculture to restore the fertility of peatlands and make them productive again.

Under the guidance of their advisors, Amirullah Setya Hardi, S.E., Cand.Oecon., Ph.D., and Dr. Rachmawan Budiarto, S.T., M.T., the CIGROSYS team won the KBMK 2024 after a rigorous selection process. This process included internal selection by the UGM Business Laboratory, evaluation of papers, semi-finals involving poster and video presentations, and the final round, where they presented directly to a panel of judges from BRIN, NGOs, academia, and research institutions.

The semester-long competition presented unique challenges, including overlapping schedules with final exams. Despite this, Agta emphasized that their victory was a collective effort, attributing it to the support of parents, lecturers, FEB UGM, friends, and the wider UGM community.

“This UGM Outstanding Individual Award is not the finish line, but rather a motivation to keep learning, dreaming, and soaring to greater heights,” said Agta.

This achievement was also supported by FEB UGM initiatives such as the public speaking training conducted by the Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU) under the students’ late mentor, Okkie Putriani, S.T., M.T., CIA. Their success is expected to inspire other FEB UGM students to excel, which aligns with the Faculty’s aim to develop future leaders in business and economics.
