Dr. Singgih Wijayana, a faculty member at the Department of Accounting, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has been selected as one of the Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) and the International Association for Accounting Education & Research

(IAAER) Scholars. Deloitte and IAAER is a prestigious program where the selection process follows strict requirements. The requirements includes a fine track record in the development of accounting reporting / effective financial and / or auditing, having a clear vision for the future of financial reporting and / or auditing, and excellent communication skills. Singgih meets the criteria as he is an accounting lecturer at UGM, a leading university in Indonesia and a researcher at the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) Center at UGM. Additionally, Singgih is a member of the IFRS implementation team working for the Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI).

The IAAER Deloitte Scholarship Program provides a broader perspective on local accounting education and the connection between local and global accounting development. In addition, this program is intended to enhance the teaching and research modules in Indonesia with global insights. In the long term, the program is expected to help improve the quality of accounting, auditing and financial reporting education and practices worldwide.

To achieve these goals, the scholars will be guided by mentors whose reputation has been recognized internationally. The mentors  include a former member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, Katherine Schipper (Duke University); former member of the International Accounting Standards Board, Mary Barth (Stanford University); Chika Saka (Kwansei Gakuin University); Sidney Gray (University of Sydney) , and Ann Tarca (University of Western Australia). The mentors will help the scholars to increase their exposure to the best practices of education and research in accounting and provide them with a global networking.

As a IAAER Deloitte Scholar, Singgih will have the opportunity to attend a joint conference with the International Section of the American Accounting Association to be held in San Antonio, Texas on 20-22 of February, 2014 and the IAAER World Congress of Accounting Educators and Researchers in Florence, Italy on 13-15 November, 2014.

The Selection of Singgih Wijayana as a Deloitte & IAAER scholar suggests that the Department of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada has a reputation that is internationally recognized in the accounting world. Previously, Supriyadi, Ph.D, another faculty member of the Department of Accounting, UGM, received the Deloitte-IAAER Scholarship in 2012-2013. Learning about the good news, Professor Ainun Na’im, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Culture who is also a professor of accounting in UGM said, “This is good news for the Department of Accounting, UGM in particular and for Indonesia in general that we have a university whose reputation is internationally recognized. We hope there will be more achievements that we can accomplish, by UGM and other universities in Indonesia.”
