A team of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) has achieved a remarkable accomplishment on the international stage. They secured third place in the OCBC Ventura International Business Case Competition 2024, held on July 18, 2024, in Jakarta.
The team, named BBM, consists of Beatrice Sarah Tiominar Silalahi (Economics 2021), Laras Syarafina Mazaya (Economics 2021), and Exxel Diandra Adyatma (Accounting 2021). Under the guidance of Choirunnisa Arifa, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Ak., CA., and Rr Tur Nastiti, M.Si., Ph.D., the BBM team competed fiercely in solving business cases organized by CompetitionRealms in collaboration with OCBC Ventura.
Exxel explained that 677 teams from 73 universities across various countries participated in this prestigious competition. At most, 1,128 students took part in this competition.
"We are grateful that our team could secure third place in this prestigious competition. Before reaching the final round, we had to go through four stages of selection and finally present our business case analysis to the judges," he stated on Friday (19/7) at FEB UGM.
The OCBC Ventura International Business Case Competition 2024 comprised four stages of selection. The first stage, the qualification round, required all teams to create an executive summary as a poster. Each team had to submit a 15-page business strategy proposal in the preliminary round. The top 10 teams were asked to prepare a 15-slide presentation in the semifinal round. Finally, in the final round, the top 5 teams presented their presentations before a panel of judges.
Exxel elaborated that the first case they encountered during the qualification stage was about an expansion strategy for an F&B company focused on providing healthy food at premium prices. The team faced a choice of expansion through equity injection from owners, fundraising, or franchising. Additionally, this case addressed strategies to enhance profitability and business sustainability.
In the second case, they dealt with a business case on the merger and acquisition of a fast-food supply chain intending to acquire the company discussed in the first case.
"In the second case, there was a financial analysis for two scenarios: creating our own brand or acquiring another company. This analysis was divided into three stages: pre-acquisition, during acquisition, and post-acquisition," he explained.
The achievement of the BBM team is the result of hard work, team solidarity, and support from FEB UGM. The Head of CSDU FEB UGM, Arizona Mustika Rini, Ph.D., stated that FEB UGM, through the Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU), provides various facilities for all FEB UGM students participating in competitions at the national, regional, and international levels. CSDU facilitates students or student teams participating in competitions through mentoring by FEB UGM lecturers in areas such as public speaking, case analysis, and business understanding. Through these efforts, it is hoped that students or competing teams will gain sufficient knowledge and experience from lecturers in related fields.
