A Closer Look at FEB UGM’s International Undergraduate Program

Students from various countries interact during the “FEB Overview” event, showcasing the international environment of the IUP FEB UGM program.

Studying in an international environment alongside peers from various countries is a dream for many students, especially when it comes to opportunities to join double degree programs and student exchanges with top universities worldwide. This is one of the main attractions for prospective students choosing an international class.

The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), through its International Undergraduate Program (IUP), offers a learning experience in a global environment. Supported by comprehensive facilities and professional faculty members in their fields, FEB UGM is one of the top business schools in Indonesia and has earned the prestigious international accreditation from Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business (AACSB) since 2014. To broaden public awareness of this global program, FEB UGM held an event titled “FEB Overview: Unlock Your Potential and Become an International Talent with IUP FEB UGM,” which was streamed live via FEB UGM’s YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram channels on Tuesday (May 6, 2025).

What is IUP FEB UGM?

The International Undergraduate Program (IUP) at FEB UGM is an international class program established in 2007. It consists of three study programs: Accounting, Management, and Economics. Arizona Mustikarini, Head of the Global Relations and Mobility Office (GREAT), explained that one of the main advantages of IUP is the wide range of international exposure schemes available. Students can choose from a one or two semester exchange program, a short-duration summer school, or a double degree program that allows them to graduate with two bachelor’s degrees in one to two years. Students can also opt for more than one type of international exposure during their studies.

Another advantage is the extensive network of partner universities across various continents. This allows students participating in exchange programs. In addition, GREAT regularly holds consultation and information sessions about international exposure options, so students don’t need to worry about navigating their choices on their own.

FEB UGM also hosts its summer school annually, called the Global Summer Week (GSW). This year, GSW is collaborating with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand, with the theme “Innovative Business Models for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future.”

FEB UGM admits around 160–170 new IUP students each year across the three study programs. FEB UGM conducts the selection process in three intakes. To apply, candidates must meet several requirements. First, they must demonstrate strong English language proficiency through a TOEFL score of 500–550 or its equivalent (IELTS or AcEPT). They must also pass the Gadjah Mada Scholastic Test (GMST), a Leaderless Group Discussion (LGD), and an interview. More detailed information is available on the websites um.ugm.ac.id or iup.feb.ugm.ac.id.

Student Experience at IUP FEB UGM

Aileen Safir Izdihar Riyanto (IUP Accounting 2023) and Santiago Balseira Martinez (Exchange Student Spring 2025 – IUP Management) shared their experiences studying in the IUP program at FEB UGM.

Aileen shared that she has benefited greatly from the English-speaking academic environment, which has boosted her confidence and better prepared her for an international career. She is also actively involved in the Global Leadership Forum (GLF), which offers a buddy program for exchange students. This year, Aileen had the opportunity to join a summer school at Copenhagen Business School (CBS).

Meanwhile, Santiago, an exchange student from Jonkoping University in Sweden, said he chose FEB UGM to challenge himself by studying in a country far from his homeland. Beyond that, the university’s reputation and Indonesia’s rich culture also influenced his decision. During his time in Indonesia, he felt welcomed and comfortable, even joining an Indonesian friend’s family vacation, which deepened his understanding of Indonesian culture. He described this experience as his most memorable moment in Indonesia. Santiago also appreciated how lecturers structured diverse discussion groups to ensure local and international students could interact and collaborate closely.

Finally, Aileen offered tips for prospective students applying to the IUP program at FEB UGM. She advised students to get used to thinking, writing, and speaking in English and to prepare for the written test thoroughly. During the LGD, being active without dominating the conversation is essential. In the interview session, applicants should appear confident, but not arrogant, and communicate their goals and motivation for getting into the IUP program clearly.
