One of the “Big Four” accounting firms, Ernst and Young (EY), visited Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada to give general lecture about “Fraud Auditing” in Auditorium BRI, Magister Sains dan Doktor FEB UGM building on Friday,
February 28 2014. This general lecture was presented by Agung Purwanto as a partner in assurance and Amien Sunaryadi as a partner in Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services (FIDS). This event was held by cooperation between the Head of Accounting Department of FEB UGM, Mahfud Sholihin, and Agung Purwanto from EY.
“To audit a number of companies listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX), there are only several accountants certified to do so,” said Agung Purwanto in his explanation about EY.
This event was attended by 70 students since 9 to 11 am. Agung Purwanto and Amien Sunaryadi explained about the process and how the work mechanism of fraud auditing is. One essential point of their explanations was the importance of integrity and honesty as an auditor.
After the explanations about the requirements which must be fulfilled by the students to enter and work in accounting firm, especially EY, the students were introduced to forensic accounting. The students were encouraged to become interested in exploring what forensic accounting is, and how it is currently developed in Indonesia. Agung and Amien emphasized the importance of forensic accounting as one way to cover fraud.
A student, Nur Mutiara Santosa said, “I’m really interested to enter forensic auditing after this event. It gives me so many insights. That would be great!.”
At the end of the lecture, the students were given some tips and tricks about how to learn auditing. Learning auditing is not merely about memorizing, but it is about how to think critically and logically until we understand how the auditing works and is implemented to gain its objectives.
