FEB UGM reaffirms its commitment to becoming an inclusive and disability-friendly campus. As part of this commitment, various initiatives continue, including efforts to strengthen the academic community’s understanding of, and ability to address, issues related to disability.
The organisation of a Disability Management Workshop realised this commitment. The workshop designed to equip education staff and students with the knowledge, skills, and sensitivity needed to create an equitable learning environment for all students, including those with disabilities. The workshop featured several speakers from Bawayang Production, who shared their experiences in building communication and empathy toward individuals with physical, hearing, and visual disabilities. The event took place on Tuesday (11/11) at the Alumni Corner Room.
During the session, a facilitator with a physical disability shared her story of adapting from being able to walk to no longer having that ability. She emphasized the importance of family and community support in building self-confidence.
The Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Suyanto, S.E., M.B.A., Ph.D., stated that this activity reflects the faculty’s commitment to creating an inclusive and disability-friendly environment for all members of the FEB UGM academic community.
“Inclusivity means everyone has the same rights. We hope that such sessions can become a regular occurrence, enabling us to develop a deeper understanding of disability management and enhance overall well-being. Friends with disabilities have the same rights and potential to pursue their goals at FEB UGM or build their careers here,” said Suyanto.
In addition to the sharing session, participants also engaged in hands-on practice, such as correctly using a wheelchair, guiding a visually impaired individual, and learning basic sign language. These exercises provided participants with empathetic experiences that helped them understand the daily challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
Meanwhile, Nur Bakti Susilo, S.E., Ak., CA., ASEAN CPA, Head of the Administrative Office of FEB UGM, emphasized that this activity aligns with FEB’s vision and mission as an inclusive and disability-friendly business school.
“FEB UGM is a place that welcomes everyone, including friends with disabilities. We hope that all members of the academic community can become individuals who are caring, sensitive, and able to interact in ways that are respectful and considerate. Inclusivity is not just a slogan; it is something we realize together through action,” he concluded.
