The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjaah Mada (FEB UGM) continues to strive to foster a healthy campus environment by providing a range of supporting facilities for the academic community. One effort to promote a healthy lifestyle within its academic community is a fitness facility available to faculty, staff, and students.
Located on the 3rd floor of the Pertamina Tower, this fitness facility is part of FEB UGM’s commitment to supporting the well-being of the academic community and encouraging a healthy lifestyle on campus. This facility has been utilized by the FEB UGM academic community, including faculty members.
Amid their busy schedules of teaching, research, and community service, several faculty members use their free time to exercise and stay fit. These activities not only benefit their physical health but also foster interaction and camaraderie within the academic community.
Mohammad Afif Sallatu, S.E., M.Sc., a faculty member in the Department of Management at FEB UGM, believes that the fitness facilities available at FEB UGM are adequate for additional on-campus exercise options.
“In my opinion, the fitness facilities at FEB UGM are quite adequate. Essential equipment such as treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines, and various other combination machines are available. In addition, there are dumbbells in a range of weights that can be used as needed,” he said.
Afif added that the availability of these facilities has encouraged faculty members to develop the habit of exercising together. At least once a week, he and several fellow faculty members schedule a group workout to maintain their health and strengthen relationships among faculty.
“This activity really helps refresh our minds and bodies after work, so that when we return home, we can interact with our families feeling more refreshed,” he explained.
Rico Saktiawan Jang Jaya, S.E., MBA, Ph.D., a faculty member in the Department of Management at FEB UGM, expressed a similar sentiment. The availability of fitness facilities and other sports amenities at FEB UGM is highly beneficial in supporting a healthy lifestyle on campus. The availability of these sports facilities demonstrates FEB UGM’s commitment to supporting UGM’s Health Promoting University (HPU) initiative, that is, building a campus ecosystem that is not only academically excellent but also cares for the health of the UGM community.
“For me, this facility serves as a reminder that, in addition to being smart in our teaching, we also need to be mindful of maintaining our physical fitness and health. With healthier bodies, our work productivity, focus, and energy to carry out the Three Pillars of Higher Education will also be optimized. I hope this facility continues to be utilized and developed so that a culture of healthy living continues to grow at FEB UGM,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Regina Fajar Sitaresmi, a professional staff member at FEB UGM, noted that the fitness center greatly helps educational staff stay active and maintain their fitness without leaving campus after work hours.
“I use this facility fairly regularly, about two to three times a week. Having this fitness facility makes it easier for us, the professional staff, to maintain our health and fitness, while also supporting the creation of a healthier and more productive work environment,” she said.
Regina hopes that in the future, the facility can continue to be developed to become even more comfortable and better accommodate users’ needs. For example, by adding more space and exercise equipment and adjusting the usage schedule to make it more convenient for the entire academic community.
In addition to providing a fitness center, FEB UGM also supports the academic community in leading an active lifestyle through various other sports facilities. These include volleyball courts, basketball courts, table tennis facilities, a billiards room, and yoga classes, all of which are available to faculty, staff, and students. These diverse facilities offer physical activity options that align with the academic community’s interests and needs, while fostering a culture of healthy living on campus.
By providing these supportive facilities, FEB UGM continues to promote a healthy, inclusive, and sustainable campus culture. These efforts align with the faculty’s commitment to creating a work-and-learning environment that supports the quality of life of the academic community.
