Highlighting the Creative Economy Sector, FEB UGM Holds 7th GAMAICEB

Saturday (09/14) Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) held the 7th Gadjah Mada International Conference on Economics and Business (GAMAICEB) 2019. Located at Learning Center of FEB UGM , this conference carrying the theme of Creative Economy: Trends, Opportunities, and Challenges.

The background of this conference was the role of the creative economy in both developed and developing countries which increased significantly. As an example In Brazil, the creative sector is responsible for 2,84% of their GDP and employs more than 11 million people. Similarly, in Indonesia, creative economy contributed to more than 7,4% of the GDP, absorbed about 17 million people (about 14% of total workforce) and more than 54% of them are women. As reported by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the world trade of creative goods and services for 2011 represent $624 billion, a value that doubled in the period of 2002 to 2011. It showed that the average annual growth of creative goods and services reached 8,8% during the period.

Therefore, the 7th Gamaiceb aims to provide a forum for sharing, disseminating and promoting cutting-edge research in current economics and business issues. The hope, this conference can create collaboration between government, academics and practitioners to encourage the growth of the creative economy in Indonesia.

The first session was a keynote speech session from Triawan Munaf, head of the Indonesian Creative Economy Agency which explained the policies and investment of creative industries in Indonesia

Also attending Ferry Jie from Edith Cowan University, Australia, who explained the key concept in the creative industry and its implications to research, Boyke Rudy Purnomo, PhD from Gadjah Mada University who presented the topic of opportunities and challenges in developing creative industries in Indonesia through the cultural city, and Phersal Gozali from Euromonitor International who gave an explanation of Strategic market research to support research on creative economy.
