Healthy relationships are shaped not only by how individuals treat others but also by how they value and understand themselves. The ability to recognize personal needs, establish boundaries, and maintain mental well-being serves as an essential foundation for building positive and supportive relationships.
These topics were among the key topics of discussion at the Mental Health Workshop organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), through its Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU), on Friday (October 30, 2026), at the FEB UGM Alumni Room. Carrying the theme “Growing in Love, Blooming in Connection: Fostering Positive Relationships Through Expression and Appreciation,” the workshop encouraged students to understand the importance of building healthy relationships with themselves and others.
FEB UGM Clinical Psychologist Nadya Salmadevi, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psikolog, explained that the quality of relationships significantly influences an individual’s happiness and well-being. According to her, healthy relationships are built on three main foundations: trust, growth, and support.
However, before establishing positive relationships with others, individuals must first learn to care for themselves. This can be achieved by practicing self-compassion, establishing healthy boundaries, and engaging in self-care.
“The key is that healthy relationships begin with how we treat ourselves. When we understand ourselves, it influences how we approach relationships. This understanding also makes it easier for us to recognize whether we are in a healthy relationship or not,” Nadya explained.
In addition to exploring psychological aspects, the workshop provided students with opportunities for self-expression through creative activities. Participants took part in a flower-making session using pipe cleaners. After learning basic techniques from the facilitator, students independently created and arranged flowers according to their creativity.
The activity offered students an opportunity to take a break from their academic routines while exploring their creativity. Through this experience, students were encouraged to recognize that maintaining mental well-being also requires consciously dedicating time and attention to themselves.
Through mental health education and expressive activities, FEB UGM encourages students to understand their personal needs better and to foster relationships built on mutual respect and support. These skills are essential for helping students navigate their academic and social lives in a healthier and more balanced way.
