HE Kjell Tormod Pettersen

On Monday (07/3), the Master of Management Study Program FEB UGM was visited by the Norwegian Ambassador of ASEAN, HE Kjell Tormod Pettersen. During the visit, Tormod also delivered a public lecture to 23 students who passed the selection of the ASEAN Master of Sustainable Management program from eight different countries, six people from Indonesia, with the rest coming from Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

Secretary of the MM FEB UGM study program, Rocky Adiguna, Ph.D., said that the ASEAN Master of Sustainable Management program is an initiative of the Norwegian Government, wherein in its implementation, the Norwegian Embassy collaborates with the ASEAN University Network (AUN), who appointed UGM as the program implementer.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Paripurna Sugarda, Vice Chancellor for UGM’s Cooperation and Alumni, said that this program is a unique and appropriate study program to realize the spirit of ASEAN and Norway’s commitment to addressing environmental conservation issues.

Prof. Dr. Paripurna Sugarda also said that the development of sustainable management is important in today’s era to renew the fundamental purpose of businesses and organizations as a force of good for the environment and society.

Through this program, the Norwegian government hopes that the transfer of knowledge will have a positive impact on environmental sustainability issues that exist in the ASEAN region and globally. Students who are selected to join this program also receive full scholarships in the form of living and tuition fees from the Norwegian government.

During the public lecture, Norwegian Ambassador of ASEAN, HE Kjell Tormod Pettersen, said that his party encourages political and security-related partnerships, especially in terms of promoting reconciliation and security, good governance, and upholding human rights. Economic cooperation in ASEAN countries is carried out in the fields of energy and free trade. Meanwhile, in the social sector, the focus is on issues of climate change, sustainability in the marine sector, environmental protection, education, and cooperation between ASEAN citizens and Norway.

In addition, Tormod also said that there will be challenges facing ASEAN and Norway in strengthening cooperation, such as reducing the increasingly heated geopolitical tension, economic integration, climate change agenda, green economy, air and sea pollution, human rights enforcement, illicit trade, and mediating political conflict in Myanmar.
