Exploring Opportunities and Facing Challenges Accounting Profession at the ASEAN Level

Tuesday (16/05), the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UGM held an ASEAN CPA Socialization event in collaboration with the Financial Profession Development Center (PPPK) Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with the Indonesian Accountancy Mentoring Committee (ACMI), and the Indonesian Institute of Management Accountants (IAMI). This activity carries the theme “Opportunities and Challenges for the Accounting Profession at the ASEAN Level” and is held at the 8th floor Learning Center Auditorium, FEB UGM.

This event began with remarks from the Head of the FEB UGM Accounting Department, Rusdi Akbar, M.Sc., PhD, Ak. ca. In his speech, Rusdi expressed gratitude to the three resource persons willing to share their knowledge. He also hopes that students can make the best use of this opportunity so that when they graduate from this university, they will be able to formulate the right strategy. This event is a platform for all of us to contribute on an ASEAN scale and take this as an opportunity to participate actively.

The next event was the awarding of plaques by Rusdi Akbar, M.Sc., PhD, Ak. ca. and Dr Arie Wibowo, S.E., S.T., M.S.Ak., CPA., ASEAN CPA. The event continued with guidance by Irvan Pratama Putra, S.Tr.Ak., CPA., CPMA., ASEAN CPA., an Analyst at PPPK, Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, as moderator.

The first speaker was Dr Arie Wibowo, S.E., S.T., M.S.Ak., CPA., ASEAN CPA as the Head of the Financial Professional Development Division (PPPK) at the Indonesian Ministry of Finance introduced PPPK and the Financial Profession under the Minister of Finance. PPPK fosters professions such as accountants, appraisers, actuaries, and tax consultants, with customs experts and class II auction officials in the integration process. Arie explained related associations and certification bodies include IAI, IAPI, IAMI, LSPTA, and others. Membership of PPPK and professional associations in international forums, including AARG, ACPACC, IFIAR, AVA, IVSC, IAA, IFAC, PPC, and AOCTA. He also explained that the requirements to become a licensed professional include passing education, professional/certification exams, work experience, registering with PPPK, obtaining permits, and opening a professional office.

The second speaker is Hilda Octavana Siregar, S.E., M.Acc., CPMA., CFP., BKP., a Member of the Central Management Board of the Indonesian Institute of Management Accountants (IAMI). Hilda presented material on “Readiness to Face Society 5.0 Era: What Interpersonal Skill Does an Accounting Student Have.” He explained that many people consider accounting unnecessary in the digital era, even though accountants are crucial to accompany so that everything can run well. In addition, Jokowi’s work program is also placing more emphasis on human resource development so that the professional path becomes very attractive. PPPK’s job is to get accountants interested in contributing and adapting to the changes. He stressed that accounting is a profession whose professionalism is maintained because of the existence of regulators, standards and policies. In addition, accountants are also a profession that experiences the highest automation.

In the last session, Dr Hardo Basuki, M.Soc.Sc., CA., CSA., Ak., ASEAN CPA., who is a Lecturer in the Department of Accounting at the Faculty of Economics and Business UGM and the General Chairperson of IAI DIY Region 2015-present, gave a presentation on the topic “Readiness Accountant Professional Education Facing the ASEAN Economic Community.” In his presentation, he underlined that the accounting profession must continue to learn and adapt to current conditions and changes. He also presents data on the increase in the number of accountants in Indonesia every year, which shows positive developments in the accounting profession. In addition, Basuki also explained the new regulation that allows undergraduate and applied undergraduate graduates to enter the accounting profession directly. In addition, he also introduced a new accountant professional education scheme.
