Seventy students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at UGM, who are members of the Student Executive Board (BEM) FEB UGM, recently planted sea pandanus at Pelangi Beach in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta.

The planting of sea pandanus seedlings was part of a series of activities commemorating World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5. BEM FEB UGM organized the event, titled “World Environment Day,” on Saturday, May 25, 2024, in collaboration with partners from Gerak Indonesia, the Climate Change Control Center of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (BPPI KLHK), and 4K Konservasi Yogyakarta. “We planted 35 sea pandanus seedlings at Pelangi Beach in Bantul as part of our efforts to promote the World Environment Day campaign,” said Mohammad Pradana Abijan Rifiar Abidin, the committee chairman, on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at FEB UGM.

Abi explained that planting sea pandanus seedlings aimed to raise public awareness about the surrounding environment, particularly at Pelangi Beach, which serves as a nesting ground for sea turtles. Sea pandanus plays a crucial role as a natural moisturizer for the temperature of the beach sand, providing an ideal environment for sea turtles to lay their eggs.

Additionally, sea pandanus plants contribute ecologically by combating coastal erosion. They help reduce the impact of tides on terrestrial ecosystems, aid in tsunami mitigation efforts, and minimize damage to areas protected by sea pandanus vegetation. “Pelangi Beach is a designated turtle conservation area, and any coastal erosion could harm turtle eggs, preventing them from hatching. Through this sea pandanus seedling planting activity, we aim to support turtle conservation efforts while mitigating coastal erosion,” he concluded.
