The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), organized an iftar gathering as a momentum to strengthen ties and reinforce ukhuwah (Islamic brotherhood) during the holy month of Ramadan. Representatives from lecturers, students, and professional staff across 14 study programmes at FEB UGM attended the event.
The event, held on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the Alumni Corner of FEB UGM, featured Dr. Suhadi Cholil, M.A., a lecturer in the Doctoral Program in Islamic Economics and Halal Industry (PIIH) UGM.
The Dean of FEB UGM, Prof. Dr. Didi Achjari, S.E., M.Com., Akt. stated that the iftar gathering serves as a platform to foster friendship and strengthen togetherness among the FEB UGM academic community. Similar gatherings for the FEB UGM extended family are also scheduled for March 6 and March 13, 2026.
In his religious sermon (tausiyah), Dr. Suhadi Cholil highlighted Islamic teachings on the importance of environmental stewardship as part of green economic practices. He emphasized that since the time of Prophet Muhammad, Islamic teachings have contained pro-environmental values. One hadith likens the earth to a mother.
“If the earth is our mother, then we should treat it as we treat our parents. If we damage the earth, it is as if we are harming our own mother,” he explained.
Furthermore, he reminded the audience of the importance of preserving nature, such as planting trees, protecting animals, and not underestimating the existence of other living beings. He noted that in modern life, humans often fail to recognise the necessity of animals and nature, even though they are both integral parts of the ecosystem that must be preserved.
He also highlighted Islamic teachings on the wise management of resources, including avoiding excessive water use even during ablution (wudu). Although modern technology for water and resource management is available today, moral conduct in its use remains the fundamental foundation.
