Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) and Udayana University are proud to announce that they will be hosting the 4th Biennial Emerging Scholars Colloquium and Conference on Accounting and Accountability in Emerging Economies (AAEE) international conference. This prestigious event is scheduled to take place on June 25-27, 2025, in Bali. The event will raise strategic accountability and sustainable development issues in developing countries.
This conference is organized in collaboration with the Centre of Accountability and Global Development, University of Essex, UK. Hundreds of academics, researchers, policymakers, and professionals from around the world will attend this forum, which is being held in Indonesia for the first time.
Professor Shahzad Uddin, Chair of the AAEE Conference Committee from the University of Essex, explained that the AAEE 2025 theme is “Sustainable Development and Accountability in Emerging Economies,” which emphasises the importance of transparency in accounting, not only in financial matters but also in supporting sustainable development goals and driving social transformation in developing countries. The committee has selected 107 papers for presentation at this conference. The number of submissions for this year has reached an all-time high, with 200 papers submitted since the conference began in 2018.
AAEE, he continued, has been transformed into a significant global platform for academics and practitioners from developing countries to express their viewpoints and challenge prevailing narratives that are often rooted in Anglo-American or Western European contexts.
AAEE is pleased to announce that this year’s conference will feature three keynote speakers: Professor Dr. Anggito Abimanyu (Economist and Deputy Minister of Finance of Indonesia), Professor Christopher Napier (Accounting expert from Royal Holloway, University of London), and Professor Susela Devi (Researcher in the field of sustainable accounting and governance).
Emerald Publishing and the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies (JAEE), which currently holds the Q1 ranking in Scopus, fully support the prestigious conference. Similar to previous conferences, the organisers intend to publish a selection of papers in a special edition of this journal.
Dr. Arizona Mustikarini, Co-Chair from Universitas Gadjah Mada, explained that the AAEE holds its annual conference usually in the UK. This year, UGM is the first host organiser from a developing country to hold the conference in Indonesia.
Furthermore, he stated that the conference reflects the commitment of academics from developing countries to contextualize theoretical discussions. In line with the mission of FEB UGM to promote sustainability, this conference fosters impactful collaboration among parties.
