Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) and Udayana University are hosting the 4th Biennial Emerging Scholars Colloquium and Conference on Accounting and Accountability in Emerging Economies (AAEE) international conference that will take place on June 25-27, 2025 in Bali. The event will raise strategic accountability and sustainable development issues in developing countries.
This prestigious conference is organized in collaboration with the Centre of Accountability and Global Development, University of Essex, UK. This forum was held in Indonesia for the first time, presenting hundreds of academics, researchers, policymakers, and professionals from various countries.
Prof. Shahzad Uddin, Chair of the AAEE Conference Committee from the University of Essex, explained that AAEE 2025 carries the theme “Sustainable Development and Accountability in Emerging Economies,” which emphasizes the importance of accounting transparency not only in financial matters but also in supporting sustainable development goals and driving social transformation in developing countries. The committee has selected 107 papers to be presented at this conference. This year’s submission reached a record high, with 200 papers submitted since the conference began in 2018.
AAEE, he continued, has developed into an important global platform for scholars and practitioners from developing countries to voice their perspectives and challenge dominant narratives often rooted in Anglo-American or Western European contexts.
This year, AAEE will present three keynote speakers, namely Prof. Dr. Anggito Abimanyu (Economist and Deputy Minister of Finance of Indonesia), Prof. Christopher Napier (Accounting expert from Royal Holloway, University of London), and Prof. Susela Devi (Researcher in the field of sustainable accounting and governance).
Emerald Publishing and the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies (JAEE), which now holds a Q1 ranking in Scopus, fully support the conference. As in previous conferences, the organizers plan to publish several selected papers in a special edition of this journal.
Dr. Arizona Mustikarini, Co-Chair from Universitas Gadjah Mada, explained that the AAEE holds its annual conference usually in the UK. This year, UGM is the first host organizer from a developing country to hold the conference in Indonesia.
He further said that this conference is a form of commitment from academics from developing countries to bring theoretical discussions closer to the context of the developing world. With a theme that aligns with the mission of FEB UGM to encourage sustainability, this conference is a catalyst for meaningful collaboration between parties.
