FEB UGM Educates Residents on the Dangers of Online Gambling and Illegal Loans

The Faculty of Economics and Business of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) conducted an educational and socialization event on capital market investment and the dangers of online gambling and illegal online loans for the residents of Plumbon Lor Hamlet, Mororejo Village, Tempel District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY).

This event, organized by the Financial Studies Division, Management Laboratory, FEB UGM, on August 5, 2024, aimed to enhance the community’s understanding of wise and safe financial management. The event featured financial experts as speakers, including an analyst from PT HINTS Global Investment, Rizka Ismi Khoiriah, S.Tr.M., RSA., RES., AWP.

Rizka presented on wise financial management, from assessing economic conditions and planning goals to regularly implementing and revising plans. She also introduced various investment products such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. In addition, she explained basic investment principles, including diversification and risk awareness.

“Be cautious when investing, especially in illegal investments that promise unrealistic high returns,” she stated.

During the event, Rizka also highlighted the dangers of online gambling and illegal online loans (pinjol). She explained that online gambling is dangerous because it can lead to addiction and financial loss. Meanwhile, illegal online loans negatively impact the community due to their high interest rates and harsh and threatening debt collection practices.

R. Muhammad Fajri, S.E., MBA., Coordinator of the Financial Studies Division, Management Laboratory, FEB UGM, stated that this socialization and education event was designed to increase financial literacy among the community, especially the residents of Plumbon Lor Hamlet, Mororejo Village, Tempel. This program also aimed to provide information on safe and legal investments and to educate the community on the dangers of online gambling and illegal online loans, which have been increasingly prevalent in recent times.

“Through this event, Plumbon Lor Hamlet residents are expected to understand the basic concepts of capital market investments, recognize signs of fraudulent investments, and understand the risks and dangers of online gambling and illegal online loans,” he explained.
