Students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University (FEB UGM), have once again achieved a proud milestone at the national level. The Simfoni team, consisting of Anne Grace Pardosi, Keyra Audrey Annabelle Christian, and Orie Priscylla Mapeda Lumalan, who are students of the 2023 Accounting Study Programme, won first place in the Accounting Paper Competition (APC) at the Diponegoro Accounting’s Harmony (DASH) 2025 event.
In the competition organised by the Faculty of Economics and Business, Diponegoro University (FEB UNDIP) on 26–27 September 2025, the Simfoni team won first place after beating dozens of other teams from various universities in Indonesia. They were tasked with solving a case study on the aviation industry in Indonesia. This industry plays a vital role in the national economy, but it also contributes approximately 1% or 8.08 million tons of global carbon emissions. In addition, noise around airports hurts public health, while several airlines also face challenges in governance aspects, such as fraud cases.
Orie Priscylla Mapeda Lumalan said that the Simfoni team proposed the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based ESG Predictive Analytics Hub in the form of software integrated with airline operational systems. This platform serves to minimise carbon emissions through route optimisation and the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). In addition, the developed platform can be used to monitor noise levels and analyse public sentiment, as well as improve transparency and regulatory compliance.
The research was conducted using a mixed-method approach, combining descriptive research and development (R&D) and a systematic literature review of various secondary data sources. The analysis was conducted through risk mapping, SWOT analysis, risk mitigation planning, and ESG performance assessment based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This idea is expected to support the transformation towards a green economy and strengthen the application of sustainability principles in the national aviation sector.
“We never expected to win first place, especially since our competitors came from major universities with outstanding research quality. This experience has been a valuable lesson and motivation to continue developing,” she concluded.
