UGM Students Won 2nd Place and Best Speakers in Indonesian Student Debate Competition 2018 at Universitas Negeri Malang

The Indonesian Student Debate Competition (KDMI) is a competition organized by the Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs (Ditjen Belmawa) of the Republic of Indonesia. This competition uses the Asian Parliamentary System. The Asian Parliamentary System (APS) system is a system which adopted from the debate competition system between Asia Pacific universities.
The 2018 KDMI was held at the State University of Malang on August 17-20 2018. The event was attended by 14 best teams of representatives from universities throughout Indonesia, such as the University of Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, State University of Malang, State University of Surabaya, Mulawarman University, Tadulako University and many more. KDMI 2018 consisted of three stages of preliminary rounds (14 teams), quarter-finals (8 teams), semifinals (4 teams), and the final round (2 teams).
Universitas Gadjah Mada team, which consisted of Sisilia Juliana Hanamaria (Economics 2016), Roiyan Ali Kurniawan (Vocational School 2016) and Varrel Vendira (Urban and Regional Planning, 2016), managed to reach the final round with a team from the University of Indonesia. With a motion "This house believes that the government must regulate the choice of prospective student majors in State Universities" and UGM acted as proposition team. The preparations made by the UGM debate team can be said to be quite long. Through university level selection which then continues to the Kopertis level and national level representing UGM. In the end, the UGM team managed to become the 2nd winner in this competition and Sisilia Juliana Hanamaria obtained the Third Best Speaker at KDMI 2018.
