Hackathon Sookmyung 2024

Once again, a student from the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) has gained international recognition. This time, Najwa Waqiah, a Management student from the Class of 2022, won an award at The 2024 Sookmyung UNESCO UNITWIN Advanced Workshop and Hackathon organized by the Asia Pacific Women’s Information Network Center (APWINC), Sookmyung Women’s University, in collaboration with the South Korean Ministry of Education.

Held in South Korea from November 11-15, Najwa received an award in the Leadership category. This remarkable achievement brings pride to UGM and Indonesia on the global stage.

In addition to Najwa, FEB UGM also sent Virdza Anditha Arya Putri (Management, Class of 2023) to participate in the event, which supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to quality education and gender equality. The program brought together nearly 70 participants from seven universities in four Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

The two FEB UGM students were part of the UGM delegation of 10 other UGM students to the Asia Pacific Women’s Information Network Center (APWINC). The twelve female students selected as delegates had previously undergone a series of Digital Entrepreneurship Training from April 30 to May 14, 2024, and Digital and Leadership Training from July 1 to 5, 2024, conducted online and offline at UGM.

Students from different countries worked together during the workshop to create innovative projects. The facilitators presented and evaluated these projects at the end of the program. In the digital training sessions, participants gained basic knowledge of Python, its applications in data science, program development using datasets, and ways to build AI models to solve real-world problems as practical implementations of data science. Meanwhile, the Leadership Class equipped participants with skills to develop social businesses aligned with the SDGs through social research, business model development, branding strategies, application design, and user scenario planning.

The hackathon workshop honed technical skills, problem-solving, and collaboration, preparing students to become competent and competitive professionals in the digital age. With a focus on improving the quality of education and promoting gender equality, the program inspires students to become change agents capable of positively impacting society.
