FEB UGM Students Win 1st Place in Paper Competition at SEKOIN 2024

Tim Pairgrowth - SEKOIN 2024

Students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) won first place in the 2024 Investment Competition Week (SEKOIN) for the Paper Competition category, organized by the Capital Market Community (CMC) Politeknik Negeri Semarang. The online competition, held online from July 1 to November 9, 2024, attracted 130 students from 444 universities across Indonesia.

This achievement was achieved by Ali Alexander, a 2021 Management student, and Elsa Firlyani from the Property Management and Valuation Study Program class of 2021, who formed the Pairgrowth team.

The victory came after a rigorous selection process. The first step was to prepare an equity research paper. In this phase, the participants thoroughly analyzed macroeconomic aspects, industry trends, company profiles, business processes, finances, valuation, and company risks.

The Pairgrowth team selected PT Bank Central Asia, Tbk. (BCA) as their research target. Despite challenges in the banking sector due to macroeconomic fluctuations such as rising interest rates and deflation risks, the team successfully identified hidden opportunities that made BCA’s shares attractive for investment.

“We used a comprehensive top-down analysis approach. Although many negative catalysts made investors skeptical about the banking sector, we found that some provided advantages for BCA, such as higher bond yields in its portfolio,” Ali said on Wednesday (8/1/2025).

The top 10 teams then competed again in the final round, presenting their work to a panel of judges. The Pairgrowth team impressed the judges with their in-depth analysis and strong case for investing in BCA stock.

Ali noted that FEB UGM supported their success with guidance from their advisor, Eddy Junarsin, Ph.D., CFP, and administrative support provided by the Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU).

“We are very grateful and proud to represent FEB UGM nationwide. We hope to be more successful in future competitions,” he said.
