In recent years, the development of blockchain technology and digital assets has brought significant breakthroughs to the financial system. However, amid this rapid growth, users’ understanding of fundamental concepts such as private keys and self-custody remains relatively low. Education, therefore, plays a crucial role in fostering sustainable adoption of blockchain technology and digital assets.
This issue featured in the February UGM podcast, titled ‘Why Education Matters More Than Hype in Blockchain Adoption’, in which the keynote speaker was Kerry Washington, the CEO of Grunt Software and developer of Brain Wallet. In the discussion, Kerry emphasized that misconceptions about private keys remain widespread across countries. This situation further exacerbates the problem of speculative narratives in the crypto ecosystem, which lure many new users with the promise of quick profits, even though they do not understand the underlying mechanisms. He noted that such an approach could be harmful to users in the long run.
In response to these challenges, Kerry developed Brain Wallet, an educational platform based on gamification that simplifies users’ understanding of crypto concepts, particularly private keys and self-custody. Drawing from his experience with users who lost their seed phrases or lacked understanding of digital wallets, Kerry created Brain Wallet to transform how users learn about digital asset security.
One of Brain Wallet’s key advantages lies in its innovative approach to helping users remember their keys. Instead of using traditional formats, the platform uses visual symbols, such as emojis, to enhance memory retention.
“I thought, why not turn this into a game? But instead of using words, we could use emojis. Based on my research, there are around 5,000 emoji combinations. When combined, the level of complexity increases significantly, and the meaning becomes subjective,” he explained.
This approach to gamification emerged because conventional learning methods are often too technical for the average user. By offering a more intuitive learning experience, Brain Wallet aims to bridge the gap between complex concepts and user understanding.
Kerry also emphasised the importance of gradually delivering education, ensuring that users fully grasp each concept before moving on. He highlighted the importance of building healthy financial habits. For students and beginner users, the ability to save and manage budgets is a fundamental skill that cannot be overlooked, especially given the volatility of digital assets.
Furthermore, he warned against impulsive decision-making driven by mobile-based applications. The integration of trading platforms with addictive app designs can encourage irrational financial behavior.

As an alternative, Kerry underscored the importance of social interaction and community in the learning process. Direct discussions with others are considered more effective for building a deeper understanding than information obtained through social media. His experience interacting with students in Indonesia also revealed significant potential for the growth of the blockchain ecosystem. With its large population and high level of technology adoption, Indonesia has the potential to become a strategic market for the development of digital financial technologies.
Nevertheless, Kerry emphasized that the future of blockchain is not solely determined by technological innovation, but also by users’ readiness to understand it. Without adequate literacy, adoption risks becoming unsustainable.
He encouraged the younger generation not only to follow trends but also to build a deep understanding and consistently explore their interests. He emphasized that long-term success is shaped not only by opportunities but also by perseverance.
“Work on what you love and enjoy. Nothing can stop you if you truly love it, and that is the key to becoming an expert,” he concluded.
