Social media management has become key in promoting, communicating, and disseminating information for institutions and organizations, including the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM). Unfortunately, the frequent use of social media also brings security risks such as data theft, cyber-attacks, hoaxes, and the potential hacking of official accounts.

To enhance the capacity of social media security management, FEB UGM organized a social media security training on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Program Building, FEB UGM.

Social media administrators from different work units, study centers, and programs within FEB UGM attended the event. The training was designed to equip FEB UGM’s social media administrators with skills to deal with threats that could affect the institution’s reputation.

Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration and Alumni at FEB UGM, emphasized the importance of social media management, especially in light of the increasing cases of hacking of personal and institutional social media accounts. Therefore, raising awareness and developing skills to secure social media accounts is crucial for administrators.

“With the increasing social media activity within FEB UGM, security issues are paramount. We must strengthen security protocols by enhancing awareness of the importance of secure social media management. Hopefully, this can be exercised and become a sustainable habit,” he said on Tuesday (14/01).

Gumilang added that FEB UGM has discussed the importance of two-factor authentication since 2024. He hopes FEB UGM official and personal social media accounts will implement this measure.

“As an account becomes more popular, it is more likely to be targeted,” Gumilang added

UGM’s IT expert, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ridi Ferdiana, S.T., M.T., was the keynote speaker. As the director of UGM’s Information Technology Directorate, Prof. Ridi provided insights on cybersecurity threats, effective ways to build social media security, and AI-based security measures.

“Regular training for social media professionals and managers at FEB UGM can significantly reduce the risks of human error and security mishaps in social media management,” Ridi explained.

This training aims to improve the skills of FEB UGM’s social media managers and encourage them to implement better security protocols to protect FEB UGM’s digital integrity and reputation.
