Building a solid personal brand is one of the most critical steps in increasing your chances of landing your dream job. So what steps should be taken to develop this personal brand?
The Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU) of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UGM aims to equip its students to be better prepared to enter the job market through the Career Preparation Workshop held at FEB UGM on November 22, 2024. The event featured business consultant Siti Nuryani Kasanah of INPARTNER Consultant, who shared tips and tricks on building personal branding and optimizing resumes (CVs).
Siti Nuryani emphasized the importance of personal branding for fresh graduates and students. She explained that the first step in building a personal brand is defining a brand statement - a unique identity or persona one wants to present to others. "To determine a brand statement, you need to identify several things, such as positive attributes, uniqueness, strengths, skills and experiences, and the values or benefits you offer," she explained.
In addition, Siti encouraged students to self-discover through the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test, which briefly describes one's personality. She noted that understanding oneself is crucial to applying for jobs that match one's character and personality.
During the workshop, Siti shared tips and tricks for creating a solid resume. These included having a robust online presence by contributing to websites, blogs, or microsites and including a portfolio of work. She advised students to be active on social media, especially professional platforms such as LinkedIn. In addition, she suggested optimizing resumes by using relevant keywords and accurate profiles, as well as using AI tools to assist with resume creation and assessment.
In his opening remarks, FEB UGM's Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Suyanto, S.E., M.B.A., Ph.D., noted that the current job market is highly competitive. Therefore, students must prepare early to ensure their readiness when entering the job market. He hoped that the students would gain valuable insights from the workshop that would serve as helpful preparation for their future careers.
